Using a Strap for Stronger Body-Brain Maps
This coming week we will be playing with a strap in several common poses to find new areas of integration and connection. I heard it said once:
Straps are a boundary, showing us where we start and where we end. So we know our potential and also know our limits.
Becoming aware of where we are in space (proprioception) or feeling a connection more fully or for the very first time (introception) allows you to not only find those sensations on your own again but also builds your body-brain maps!
One of my favorite movement books of all time explains this topic so well: A Guide to Better Movement by Todd Hardgrove.
"The quality of movement and perception in a particular body part is determined in part by the size and quality of the motor sensory maps for that body part. If you have a very detailed map of a certain area, you can perceive and move that area with precision. If the map is less defined or "fuzzy," perception and movement will be less accurate."
The implications are huge! More freedom of movement, better coordination, a heightened sense of balance, less pain, less discomfort and more.
Let's build our body-brain maps together! :)
