Have we come together or are we allowing the age-old 'business as usual' systematic powers perpetuate the status quo? What role does art and/or the artist play in moving toward positive social change? What is our individual/social/cultural birthright? Is it being dismantled? In a system that claims to be 'of the people, by the people, and for the people,' which people are we talking about?" What's Going On? This exhibition poses these questions and seeks to explore how art, in many facets, is being utilized to show us who we are and what we are doing in relation to the current cultural landscape. It is, in essence, a visual, conversation that will possibly lead toward discovering the answers or realizing your real truth. |

CLEVER LAYER Courtney Starrett August 3 - September 29, 2018 Opie Gallery Clever Layer is a collection of recent works by New York-based artist Courtney Starrett. The works in this exhibition were created utilizing a process Starrett coined “Data Materialization.”
Data materialization is a workflow to create 3D objects from data-informed designs. Building upon traditional metalwork and craft, and new technology’s data visualization with generative art, this workflow expresses conceptually relevant data through 3D forms which are fabricated in traditional media. The process allows for the subtle application of data in visual art, allowing the aesthetic allure of the art object or installation to inspire intellectual intrigue. Drawing on the concepts of gender roles, consumer marketing, and material science this exhibition invites the viewer to experience the artwork in multiple ways, catching the eye and sparking curiosity. ...read more... |

INTERSECTIONS Courtney Starrett and Susan Reiser October 5 - December 1, 2018 Back Gallery Intersections invites viewers to connect with light, color, shadows, form, space, and place. Viewers manipulate red, green, and blue lights to produce multi-colored shadows and reflections. The forms are inspired by the architecture of Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, NY), and the cut pattern is visualized from ten years of demographic Vassar data. This installation exemplifies some of the myriad intersections between art and science: color theory, design, and fabrication.
Intersections is the first full-blown collaborative art effort between Starrett and Reiser, created while in residence at Vassar College. The intention of the work is to visually and conceptually bridge the arts and sciences while using the picturesque campus as source material. Starrett and Reiser spent two months working at Vassar within the Creative Arts Across Disciplines program. ...read more... |

KCAI | Undergrads Underground Gallery PAINT THIS CITY Anna Schuetz October 5 - October 27, 2018 Kansas City’s spaces are filled with artwork. Compositions can be found throughout often where you don’t anticipate to find interest. Street art is an accessible and expressive visual language that is often covered by patches of paint, a direct oppression of expression. These buffed walls can be found in excess in urban areas all over the world. They can be connected to countless movements, but today could be considered their own movement of unconscious creation that will never end, as street artists continue to tag the blocks of color, beginning the process over again. These images often stand as a representation of oppression, or to some, just as an attempt to discourage vandalism. Regardless, the public tends to view the patches of paint as a nuisance. Re-appropriating those often disregarded compositions into a painting encapsulates them in time and creates a new intimacy between the artist, the paint, and the painting by forcing one to stop and study the intricacies of s space. Paint This City consists of work made by Anna Schuetz, a junior in the Painting at KCAI, in reference to the paint around Kansas City. This show is a testament to the paint in the city, to the intimate experience of inhabiting a landscape, and the act of making and looking at a painting. ...read more... |
