Help us name the new Council Chambers
in memory of WB Freebody!
We need your public support so that the name of the Chambers compliments the sculpture, which is to be located at it's entrance. We have until the 12 September to register any feedback to Council.
Since curating and hosting the award-winning exhibition "Connee-Colleen: Queanbeyan Character" in 2020 I have become involved in seeing one of Connee’s unfinished projects come to light. This was the completion of a bronze sculpture of William Byrne Freebody by Neil Dickerson. Acceptance of this gift and final location was voted for and approved by council at a council meeting a couple of months ago.
WB Freebody had the 'Midas Touch' in business as well as in community work. He served 41 years as a Queanbeyan Councillor. He made a significant contribution during the formative years in establishing Queanbeyan, its district and the ACT.
The location for this sculpture will be on the second floor of the newly built Queanbeyan Civic and Cultural Precinct - now named Nellie Hamilton Centre - at the entrance to the new Council Chambers. The sculpture will overlook Crawford Street to the heritage-listed house which was once his home (now occupied by Baker Deane & Nutt Lawyers).
The Council endorsed the naming of the new Council Chamber as the WB Freebody Chambers at a meeting held on August 14. QPRC are now seeking the community's feedback on this name. It has come to light that someone in our community is canvassing that the Chamber be named instead after previous mayor, Tim Overall. If you support the value of heritage, please consider completing the survey in favour of the name WB Freebody Chambers.
