Meta has informed European users that public posts on Facebook and Instagram could be used to train its A.I. services, including chatbots. This change, effective from June 26, has raised privacy concerns, especially in light of Europe's stringent privacy laws.
Unlike in Europe, this practice has already been in place in the U.S., where privacy laws are less stringent. Meta’s chatbot, powered by LLaMA 3, learns from a variety of online data, including public social media posts. While private posts and messages are excluded, public posts are fair game. European users can opt out through the Meta Privacy Center, but for U.S. users, the only option is to set accounts to private.
Although privacy watchdogs have voiced concerns, Meta assures that the information gathered will be used to enhance user experience and comply with laws. The debate on data usage and privacy continues, emphasizing the need for transparency and user control in the digital age.
