ACWA Election of Officers

ACWA Members,

At the All members meeting on December 19, 2023, the membership approved bylaws change. The change affected the way we will elect officers in the future.  Please attend your club’s monthly meeting(s) in January. At that meeting each club will elect Officers, a President, Vice President, and a Recording Secretary. Each club will also nominate 3 Directors to the ACWA Executive Board. Those 3 “Directors” can be the club’s officers or any other member in good standing. The Carvers have already elected their Officers, but they still need to nominate 3 members to the Executive board. The ACWA Executive Board will meet in February. From the newly appointed “Directors” a President, 2 ea. Vice Presidents, Recording Secretary, and a Treasurer will be elected. The election of the New ACWA Board will be presided over by the current Executive Board President. The new Officers for all clubs and the Executive Board will assume their respective duties March 1, 2024. The Current President of each club will refer the names, phone numbers, and e-mail of the newly elected Officers and Directors to Acting ACWA President, Jim Powell, jpow1700@gmail.com.

Thank You

Acting ACWA President

Jim Powell

Woodworkers Chapter News

January 2024

Woodworkers Club Officers:  President: Sandy McKinnis, Vice President: Jim Powell;

Board Members: Larry Holman, Bob Lackey, Greg Lyall, Alan Peck, Bill Poole

January 9 Monthly Meeting:

The January monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, January 9 at 7 p.m. in our workshop at the Alaska Industrial Hardware (AIH) store located at 2716 Commercial Drive. Please enter by the door around the back of the building. The main front entrance will be closed since the meeting time is after store hours.

Long-time member, Dave Junge will return with a presentation called “How to Frame your Friends.” Dave will cover creative framing techniques. Dave’s last presentation on Making Musical Instruments was really informative and the instruments he brought in and played were amazing. This presentation on framing should be equally engaging. Beginning to expert woodworkers are sure to be inspired and learn new twists on techniques.

We will also hold our Woodworker Chapter Board elections for Officer and Director positions at this meeting. The Board members work together to organize meeting presentations and to provide the members learning opportunities through diverse classes. They manage the workshop maintenance and safety; staff the Open-Shop Program as monitors. The Board members communicate with our members, supporters, and the public. On the administrative side, they develop an annual budget and financial planning; and lastly, they provide support to the ACWA Executive Board. Incorporating new ideas and diverse skill sets improve what the Chapter can do. That means we need you to become involved in steering the direction of the Chapter. Please volunteer at the January meeting to become part of the Board and make a difference in our community. The election will be for the following positions: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and the Directors.

We would like to encourage everyone to bring show-and-tell items. These can include a project you have been working on, a technique or jig you’d like to share.

The main portion of our monthly meetings feature guest speakers as well as members who share their expertise. Past topics have included design and construction techniques, project presentations, tool tune-ups, jig demonstrations, and bending.

December Monthly Meeting Recap:

The Woodworkers Chapter meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month from September to May.

The December Woodworkers Chapter meeting was replaced with the umbrella organization Alaska Creative Woodworkers Association (ACWA) Annual Meeting for all members to approve proposed ACWA by-law changes (mostly regarding elections) and planning for the 2024 Artistry in Wood Show (open to the public from Feb. 22 to March 9). Based on the adopted by-law changes, the Woodworkers, Carver, and Scroller Chapters will hold elections in January 2024.

New Shop Tools:

The Laguna model 14 Twelve band saw donated by Larry Holman, Greg Lyall and Hardware Specialties has been put to good use in classes and the Open Shop Program. Very glad we have this great quality tool available for members!

AIH has generously provided new tools for our use as well. AIH added a top-of-the-line Bosch miter saw with a stand this fall and in December we got a delivery of a Shark CNC (computerized numerical control) woodworking machine. In the future we will offer classes using the CNC, design software, and you’ll experience the benefits and uses..

Thank you to AIH:

AIH has provided the ACWA and Woodworkers Chapter with incredible support this year. As a thank you, Chapter Board Director Bob Lackey, AWCA Treasurer Lisa Lackey, and Chapter President Sandy McKinnis made engraved clocks for Terry Shirtleff, CEO of AIH, Jeff Clapp, COO of AIH and Brenna Manuel, the store manager where our new shop is located. Sandy and Board Director Alan Peck presented the clocks to Terry and Jeff in late December.

Open Shop Program: Woodworking Saturday moves to Every Wednesday:

The Open Shop Program is now offered every Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. Our volunteer shop monitors are excited about the new schedule which increases the opportunities for members to have access to the workshop and the shop monitors will be there to help folks with projects as needed.

Please Note: If you want to use the shop, you need to sign up on the website as we can only have a maximum of 4 students in the shop on each date (https://www.alaskacreativewoodworkersassociation.org/book-online). You will need to indicate what you are planning to build, what kind of help you need and the time you will be there.

Here are members working on their own projects during the December 2 Open Shop Saturday:

Flattening a reference edge on the joiner

Soch Lor working on her steam bent chair

Fall Classes:

Most of our classes are led by experienced woodworker AWCA members for the benefit of all our members to learn, build and get to know fellow members. A big thanks to those instructors for all the hours they put in preparing for and teaching these classes! There is a lot that goes into each class offering.

In the last month, many of you have been to the ACWA website and seen the weekend and weeknight class offerings for winter/spring 2024 expanded. It’s exciting to see the level of interest; early registration to date has been higher than anticipated. There are a few more classes we are working on that will be posted soon. Keep checking back on the website to jump on these too.

3) Kids Class on December 30.

This was a free, fun hands-on construction class for children in the 1st through 5th grade sponsored by the Alaska RiteCare Foundation and ACWA.

Welcome new Members:

Welcome to our newest members. We are happy to have you with us and hope you’ll make regular appearances at the monthly program, take many classes, contribute to the newsletter, and volunteer in other ways. Be sure to introduce yourself!

Meet a Member Feature: Bob and Lisa Lackey

This month we introduce you to members Bob and Lisa Lackey. They operate Fishhook Woodworks near Palmer and have been active with the ACWA and generous with their time.

Bob and Lisa have a diverse business with the typical traditional woodworking power tools plus unique industrial sized tooling of a CNC router machine and a large laser cutter and engraver. Bob is a professional woodworker specializing in custom cabinetry, furniture, built-in units, custom doors, as well as many small projects. Lisa uses a computer to design projects, then cuts and engraves with the laser on wood, leather, acrylic and metal. Their laser machine is limited to 60 inches by unlimited (it can do big work!). Lisa is a financial bookkeeper for a private company, as well as for Fishhook Woodworks.

Bob and Lisa became involved with the ACWA and the Woodworkers Chapter just a few years ago by taking various classes that interested them. They thought our association was valuable to the community by providing a creative outlet for diverse types of woodworking not typically available elsewhere, even in some large cities in the Lower 48. More recently, Lisa is on the ACWA Executive Committee and the Treasurer while Bob serves as one of the Woodworker Chapter Directors. Bob taught classes building cabinets, tool chests, benches, and soon (Feb. 2024) a bookcase. Lisa taught three classes making signs, cutting boards, and using the Shaper Origin handheld CNC router.

Bob and Lisa moved to Palmer in 2009. They built their home and the 1800 square foot workshop themselves. Their three children are grown and out on their own. Cooper, is frequently a shop dog during the day.

Mission Statement:

The Alaska Creative Woodworkers Chapter is dedicated to the promotion of skill, craft, and excellence in the woodworking community through education, information, and fellowship.
