30th WiN Global - Annual Conference in Egypt

On the occasion of WiN Global 30th anniversary, our honorable WiN Global Young Generation members played a pivotal role in 30th WiN Global annual conference that took place from November 13 to 16, 2023, under the theme "Women for the Sustainable Development of Nuclear and Radiation Applications." Hosted by WiN Africa and held in Aswan, Egypt, the conference received the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Moustafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt.

 

The 30th WiN Global conference featured a dynamic agenda, including a general assembly, reports on groups of expertise and chapters' activities, oral and panel sessions, poster exhibitions, an NEA-WiN Global international mentoring session, a cultural tour and WiN Global Awards Ceremony.

 

On behalf of WiN Global Young Generation, Stephanie Neira, WiN Global YG Communication Lead, led and moderated the session "Women in Nuclear Across Generations" together with Adeline Yuego, WiN Global YG Partnerships and Grants Lead. The session featured Heba Elkomy, Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority, Estiner Katengeza, WiN Malawi President, Hasna Al Blooshi, Nawah Energy Company, UAE and Ntebatse Matube, NECSA, who shared their experience in their career development, providing insight into what are the critical points we need to continue to work on to support the younger generation in their professional development and entry into the field.

During the event, the 1st Annual meeting of WiN Africa was also held with the participation of representatives from different countries. On the other hand, as is customary in all Annual Conference, the flag was passed to the next host country, on this occasion Raquel Heredia, president of WiN Mexico, received the banner.

Celebrating all YG's prizes

We would like to celebrate our members who have been decorated with different awards at events over the last few months. We are honoured to have them as part of our team.

Amanda Mbhele, South Africa.

Ms. Amanda Mbhele, a renowned member from South Africa and scientist, achieved a remarkable feat at the International Conference on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, Decommissioning, Environmental Protection, and Remediation in Vienna, Austria, from November 6th to 10th, 2023 receive in this occasion the Young Generation award for her groundbreaking paper, "Experiences, Challenges, and Future Prospects in Decommissioning Nuclear Fuel Cycle Facilities in South Africa."

Her research emphasized Necsa's role in advancing sustainability, reducing environmental impact (SDGs 15 & 14), and promoting the circular economy (SDG 9).

Amanda’s win is a testament to the potential of young scientists in shaping the future of nuclear technology for a sustainable and eco-friendly global energy landscape. 

 

Larissa Pinhero - Brazil

In the presence of Ministers, Authorities, and intellectuals, our distinguish member Larissa Pinhero receive with her team, the award for the First Brazilian Nuclear Olympiads, under the project Amana. Amana, was presented this honor by the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Luciana Santos.

Amana, meaning 'rain' in Tupi-Guarani, reflects a goal of prosperity. This proposed Clean Energy Complex project includes a desalination plant (reverse osmosis), a direct air carbon capture system (Climeworks), co-electrolysis and electrolysis processes (Sunfire GmbH), and the production of diesel through the Fischer-Tropsch route, not to mention the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) plant (NuScale Power), aims for positive social and environmental impacts.

Juliette, Claire Goupil, Rafaela

The 15th Fem Energia Award ceremony held in Paris, France, celebrated the exceptional achievements of women in the nuclear industry.

 

Initiated 15 years ago by WiN France, WiN Global, and EDF, this event aims to spotlight distinguished women professionals. Rafaela Mondadori from Brazil received the prestigious 1st prize in the Graduated Women category, recognizing her outstanding contributions.

Additionally, Claire and Juliette Martin, along with their team, the 'JDO DREAM TEAM', were honored with the Jury's Choice Award for their significant contributions to the High-Performance Computing (HPC) project in the UK. The ceremony, attended by officials and ministers, highlighted the remarkable accomplishments of these WiN Global Young Generation members, underscoring the importance of recognizing and celebrating women's achievements in the nuclear industry.

Larissa Noudem - France

The success of this edition undoubtedly stemmed from the active engagement of our dedicated members, including Özge Karakaş, Amaratou Saley, Emilie Hesse, Lucie Gabro, and other WiN Global YG members. They brought youthful perspectives to the forefront, contributing insights on diverse topics.

 

A special moment at WNE 2023 was the celebration of Larissa Noudem, the WIN Global Young Generation Lead. Larissa received the WiN France Initiative Award for her outstanding contributions to the WiN Community. The award was presented by the distinguished French Minister of Energy, Mrs. Agnès Pannier-Runacher. This accolade, a joint initiative of WiN France and WiN UK, acknowledged Larissa's remarkable efforts, particularly highlighting the success of their cross-channel mentorship program.

 

WNE 2023 served as a platform where global chapters of Women in Nuclear (WiN) came together, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. Larissa Noudem's award stands as a testament to the impactful contributions of WiN's young generation, reinforcing the importance of mentorship and collaboration within the WiN Community.

Ekaterina Shcheglova - Russia

 

This mouth, Ekaterina Shcheglova was distinguished with WiN IAEA Excellence Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to communication and social media endeavors. Her dedication and impactful efforts in these chapter have significantly elevated the visibility and engagement of WiN IAEA, marking her as a key figure in advancing the organization's communication initiatives. This award acknowledges Ekaterina's exemplary work, highlighting her role in fostering effective communication strategies and leveraging social media platforms to enhance the outreach and influence of WiN IAEA.
