Please take 5 minutes and Click here to send an email to your representatives asking them to sign on to Rep. Ilhan Omar’s letter opposing further U.S. assistance to state security forces in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. (Thank you to the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador, CISPES, for facilitating this sign on form).
Background from MASCP’s parent organization, US-El Salvador Sister Cities: “As you may have seen in recent news, the Salvadoran government imposed a State of Exception in response to a terrifying spike in homicides, the highest number of deaths recorded on any day since the end of the war. Under the 30-day State of Exception, meetings and gatherings are prohibited, no warrants are needed to intercept communications, people can be detained without explanation, and the period for which someone can be held without charges being presented is extended from 72 hours to 15 days. Over 10,000 people have already been arrested in massive sweeps, predominantly in poor neighborhoods. Popular movement leaders worry that not only will the state of exception result in widespread human rights abuses but will also be used to further repress the grassroots opposition. Today, with tragic consequences for democracy,
dignity and justice in El Salvador, the United States continues to fund the Salvadoran military.”
