HCOP’s COVID-19 Response COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus, is a pandemic respiratory disease spreading from person-to-person that causes mild to severe illness - posing a serious public health risk. The HCOP team has been closely monitoring the latest coronavirus (COVID-19) updates as well as real-time local, state and federal recommendations. We understand that being able to adapt to our world’s current circumstances may be difficult for most and that’s why we’re here to let you know that you can count on the HCOP staff to be there for you and your families. To minimize the risk of exposure in our community, all in-person HCOP sessions are CANCELLED. Does this mean that HCOP ends…the answer is NO. Therefore, the remaining HCOP sessions will be offered online and will remain interactive, fun and educational. And note, once finalized, these on-line trainings/workshops will be REQUIRED to be completed by each student. So, what does this mean for communication…it means that each of you must pledge to communicate with the HCOP team consistently via email as this will be the official method of communication to relay information regarding HCOP sessions, stipends, on-line trainings/workshops, upcoming events, etc. In other words, CHECK YOUR EMAIL EVERYDAY and if you believe that we may have an incorrect email address for you, contact the HCOP office immediately to update your information. #TeamHCOP |

Virtual HCOPing - Cultural Competency Training and Financial Aid/Financial Literacy Experience As the world continues to adapt to a new normal during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pipeline to Success Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) continues to provide training and resources to students that aid in their individual academic and professional success as future health professionals. So, the question is how is this done – VIRTUALLY! HCOP students (high school, undergraduate and health professional) were able to participate in two (2) vital programmatic activities this month: cultural competency training and a financial aid/financial literacy experience. First off, we all know that cultural competence in healthcare refers to the ability for healthcare professionals to demonstrate cultural competence toward patients with diverse values, beliefs, and feelings. This process includes consideration of the individual social, cultural, and psychological needs of patients for effective cross-cultural communication with their health care providers. The goal of cultural competence in health care is to reduce health disparities and to provide optimal care to patients regardless of their race, gender, ethnic background, native languages spoken, and religious or cultural beliefs. Students were tasked with viewing a well-produced video that covered the “dos” and “don’ts” of cultural competence in healthcare observed through fictional re-enactments of real-life scenarios involving health professionals, patients, friends and families of varying diverse backgrounds. Once students completed the viewing, here came the best part – the written discussion: - What did you learn from this video about other cultures?
- How is your culture different from that of the key participants in the video?
- How will you use the information when interacting with individuals from other cultures?

Maintaining Academic Momentum During a Pandemic – Christina Jelinek, HCOP Academic Success Counselor The brain is a fascinating organ. It’s the birthplace of our emotions and also the workhouse for our academic lives - it’s where we work through, wrestle with, and store information. During this uncertain time as we stay in our homes to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, I have heard a lot of students tell me about their struggles to stay motivated, to stay productive, and to maintain the great momentum they had in their semesters. I hear things like, “I miss being at school, because I just can’t seem to study at home.” or “At school I had my classes at regular times, now I have a hard time staying motivated.” Whenever issues like this come up, I try to point our attention back to that fascinating organ, the brain. Many times, we expect our brains to work like a car. No matter the weather, no matter the time of day, we can turn the key and our car will start up and run (provided it’s had its regular tune-ups, that is.) The reality is, our brain’s ability to focus and to retain information can be very dependent on things like our surroundings, our stress level, our physical health, even the time of day. So, what does that mean for us when it comes to being productive at home? Let’s break it down and see if any of these strategies can help improve your study life. |

Kyla Combs Creighton University School of Dentistry D3 Health Professional Health Careers Ambassador Program Participant Question 1: What health professional career are you pursuing and why? Answer: “The healthcare field is one field that offers the value to not only help those in need but to also present a level of educational gain by improving the daily lifestyle environment of an individual. My pursuit in the health care field is to gain a career in dentistry. I am astonished by the immediate restorative relief that dentistry is able to offer a patient in pain. The technological and clinical advancements in dentistry have captured me to pursue a higher level of understanding and a deeper admiration for the field of dentistry.". Question 2: What is your biggest accomplishment? Answer: “My time in the dental clinic has been met with various challenges and one of those challenges included the fabrication of a denture for a patient that turned into an advanced case, due to the complexity of the oral cavity structure. During the time of delivery of the denture, it was a joy to not only see the patient smile, but to build rapport with the patient that then referred their spouse to be seen by me in the dental clinic. Thus far, my biggest accomplishment is being able to learn and find ways to navigate the challenges presented in the dental field.” Question 3: What do you enjoy during your free time? Name one interesting thing about you. Answer: “Volunteering in various community organizations throughout Omaha as well as on-campus, have been beneficial during my free time, and have taught me to give back to the community. Volunteering has also been a valuable opportunity for networking experience. I’ve had the privilege to meet various individuals that have helped in driving or motivating me further on my path to becoming a dentist. The dental school presents a days-worth of challenges and added stress. However, being able to find outlets to rejuvenate, such as, physical exercise, reading, or calling home to my family, has provided a means of stress release and helped me to remain disciplined, which can be valuable in a demanding clinic environment.” |
