Aloha, everyone,

A time bank at your theater organization, a community pantry in your rehearsal room, and pop-up virtual exchanges are some of the practical tools offered in "Solidarity, in This Economy?", an article I wrote for American Theatre magazine, published this week.

Please read, react, comment, and/or share the article as feels appropriate for you.

Marie-Monique Marthol of Germantown Residents for Economic Alternatives Together first introduced the concepts of Solidarity Economy to me. John Austin, Roberto Di Donato, Shanara Gabrielle, Alexandra Harbold, Rebecca Hewett, Gail Lopes, Vijay Mathew, Kristen van Ginhoven, Elena Velasco, and many others who participated in the Solidarity Economy Learning Circles for the Theater Community over the past two years contributed to the experiments and learnings which crystallized the ideas found in the article.

"Solidarity, in This Economy?" is part of a series in American Theatre, sponsored by The Ford Foundation, envisioning futures of our artform and industry as we find ourselves at a post-pandemic crossroads.

The series is grouped into four general themes:

Business Models and Collaboration
Economic Justice and Labor
Content and Form
Audience and Impact

More articles in this series will roll out throughout Fall 2024. Please check back to catch them all.

Mahalo,
Seema
