South Monroe (SoMo) Walls Project
Reflecting on 2021

Happy New Year! We hope the holidays treated you well. We are so excited about what the new year holds for SoMo Walls, but first, we want to reflect on all we accomplished in 2021.

Keeping Our Promises

Our mission is to facilitate contracting opportunities to as many Minority & Women Small Business Enterprises (MWSBE’s) as possible. We conducted our first SoMo Walls Construction Inclusion Team (CIT) meeting with the Tallahassee-Leon County Office of Economic Vitality, the Big Bend Minority Chamber of Commerce and Small Business Development Center at FAMU.

We have posted our first bid set and started our outreach efforts. On January 6th, 2022, we held our first bid meeting onsite and are currently accepting bids from MWSBE’s.

Leasing

From the start, our goal has been to create a unique space for Tallahassee residents with locally owned shops and food options. So far, we have received formal inquiries to lease a unit in our development from over 15 local businesses. The number is growing each week with more businesses looking into bringing their concepts into SoMo Walls.

Shifting Gears

In the last quarter of 2021, our project team reached a new milestone by completing our design phase with an exciting addition to our concept, a Modern Art Exhibition. Currently, the project is navigating through the permitting phase. We aim to start demolition by the end of January 2022 and deliver the project during the summer of 2022.

Awards / Recognitions

We have amazing news to share! Our project was presented an award of Merit by the Tallahassee Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for the unbuilt category. Michael & Gina Conn, on behalf of Conn Architects, received the award.

Projects are sent to a partnering AIA chapter in another city who then creates a committee (jury), reviews the projects, and determines recipients of these recognitions.

Jury’s comments for SoMo Walls:

The jury was impressed by the potential of this project. This development scored high in the function category. The proposed complex's aim of creating a pedestrian friendly art and entertainment destination just outside of the city is successfully met through the overall design. The form of the complex with its strong, interesting, and well-articulated streetscape on three sides, creates a vibrant, urban feel that we believe would create excitement in the community and perhaps spark further similar development in the area. The interior side of the development further emphasizes the function of the project as a hub for the community with its outdoor gathering spaces and amenities. The jury was equally impressed with the use of art and technology in the building itself while providing displays for artists. Many on the jury commented that they would enjoy exploring this dynamic complex when it is complete.
