Hello,

Another difficult week with the devastation of Hurricane Ida, fires in California, the aftermath of the withdrawal of US troops and allies in Afghanistan, and the relentless Delta variant of COVID.

  • Hurricane Ida caused destruction from New Orleans to New York, with the most fatalities in New Jersey. The destruction has been breathtaking and sadly this could be a taste of life on a hotter planet, listen to NPR's take that more climate disasters will happen simultaneously. For comprehensive information on how hotels and travelers can help reduce carbon footprint, It Must Be NOW, is an incredible resource by former hotelier and passionate environmentalist Alexa Poortier and her husband Onno.
  • In Afghanistan, women are worried about their rights to work and study under Taliban rule and bravely protested, according to the Washington Post. Hundreds of thousands of Afghans have been displaced from their homes, the BBC summarised how many refugees there are, and where they've gone around the globe.
  • The Delta variant of COVID is the most transmissible strain to date and is now in 65 countries.  CNBC has charted the spread here, and CBS News did a comprehensive story on the impact on hotels and travel.

Here's what happened on hertelier:

  • SCOOP for Round-Up readers! Want to know how to network like a pro?  We chatted with entrepreneur, Davonne Reaves, who went from a front desk clerk at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta to become the first Black female hotel owner of a major brand at the tender age of 33.  How? Networking.  She spills her secret tips and tricks in this must-see video!
  • A new global study by WiH Global, Questex, and Hospitality Insights shows women and minorities are underrepresented in leadership, but more equal in entry and mid-level management jobs.  The good news is that aging Boomers should create opportunities for change in the coming years.
  • In times of crisis, we are even more grateful to those for whom service is a calling.  This week columnist Nancy Mendelson pays tribute.

Listen Up: How do you view failure? A crushing blow or a way to learn?  English author and journalist Elizabeth Day has turned failure into a cottage industry with a chart-topping podcast and books on the subject of failure.  Her podcast "How to Fail" is a favorite of mine, she asks everyone from lauded scientists and athletes to authors and celebrities about their failures and what they've learned.  Let me know what you think!

If you missed it, hertelier was featured by the Cornell University SC Johnson School of Business! Please CLICK HERE to read about the community YOU are helping to build for women in lodging!

Thank you again for your support–reading, liking, and sharing our stories of women rocking the hotel industry!  If you have a friend or colleague that you think would enjoy hertelier please forward this email!

Have a great week,

Emily
