The pandemic this year has highlighted the unjust inequalities that exist globally, between the wealthiest and poorer countries, with poorer countries and countries with healthcare inequalities unable to access the vital medical supplies, medicines and vaccines they need.
It's also shone a spotlight on the gross social, economic and gender inequalities here in the UK, with women and children being most severely impacted by Covid 19, through loss of income, inequalities in the labour market and through the unequal division of unpaid care in the household. In this context the UN's yearlong campaign Generation Equality seems ever more pressing, as does their IWD campaign this year:
“Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world."
”The theme celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Women stand at the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis, as health care workers, caregivers, innovators, community organizers and as some of the most exemplary and effective national leaders in combating the pandemic. The crisis has highlighted both the centrality of their contributions and the disproportionate burdens that women carry."
