mano-Y-ola’s Client Scores Victory

for Small Farms in Louisiana

One Woman’s Tenacity Opens Doors for Small Business Farms Across the State

Sunset, Louisiana—Continuing their efforts in connecting small farms with governmental resources, mano-Y-ola, LLC, (formerly Nolo Consulting, LLC) celebrates with their clients, the Melancon family, whose networking secured necessary grant funding for Louisiana’s first in-farm meat processing facility for a female Hispanic farmer. T. Moise Farms, LLC, located in the heart of Acadiana, will house its own meat processing plant, expanding labeling accessibility and wholesale possibilities for its own livestock and those of other farmers in the region. Their success paves the way for other “boutique” farms to procure state regulators’ approval for in-farm processing facilities.

“In the local food system, Monica Melancon is cutting out a major bottleneck in the supply chain, making it so that local agriculture and local consumption of products grown in that region is much more direct-to-market.  T. Moise Farm’s efforts will also increase local employment as it will be employing people to work at the processing plant,” said Adrian Parrott, Farm Outreach Specialist at mano-Y-ola.

mano-Y-ola’s consultants help local farmers like Monica understand and connect to resources that enhance self-sufficiency and promote regional growth. Monica, an immigrant from Peru, is a leader in her community and independently established her own network of financial and governmental support. She sees their new plant as a means to offer services to other small farms in Louisiana, who are struggling to feed their animals amidst limited location options in processing and selling meats during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
