Connection

January 2024 - #33

Welcome. Haere Mai.

Recently I was asked to write a refection focusing on Zero Discrimination day. When writing the reflection I was inspired to create a modern interpretation painting of the story of Jesus and Zacchaeus. Please see the artwork reflection to learn more. And have a look below for links full of beauty, goodness, and truth from our world—showing us as Jesus did that all are welcome.

AMDG. Happy new year! Love and prayer

Inspirational Things

Beauty (that which is lovely)

 > Sacred art prize: Check out the diverse beauty shining through the 2023 winners and finalists.

> Ethiopian illustrated Gospel book: Illuminated manuscript created in an Orthodox monastery at Gunda Gunde (northern Ethiopia). This monastery was founded as a refuge from religious persecution. Now the entire manuscript can be downloaded via the museum’s website.

> Come, My Way (3min): A modern arrangement of the beautiful 17th century hymn, "The Call”. Inspired by Pope Francis's call for Catholics to take to the streets in sharing the Gospel. Filmed by Blackfriar Films in NYC.

> Hebrew worship song from Israel (6min): Perhaps listen, and remember the conflict in the holy land — and lets pray for zero discrimination and peace!

Goodness (that which fulfils its purpose)

> Jesuit Media Lab: Join in and check out this new fantastic new Hub for Ignatian Creators where all are welcome. View the intro video (2min) + view this recent Advent art reflection session with Br Mickey McGrath (88 min).

Truth (that which defines reality)

> Awe and Amazement: Reflections and a practice of taking photos from Rabbi Hara, plus Rohr, Cannato, and more on the spiritual practice of awe. Finding  beauty in the ordinary connects us… “It could be said that to find beauty in the ordinary is a deeper exercise than climbing to the mountaintop….”

> Inclusive Blessings (5min): Pope Francis’s blessings for same-sex couples has taken empathetic steps, acknowledging the truthful pains of the past, and beginning to take steps towards a welcoming future.

> Finding Connection (9min): Grant Hine vulnerably speaks his truth and creates connection. “Nature just accepts you for who you are... Nature is honest”.

> Susan Cain on Bittersweet Emotions (16min): In this TED Talk, author Susan Cain explores how being attuned to the bittersweetness of life — and being fully present to beauty, art, both the happy times and the sad times helps us navigate love and loss and connect to the "insane beauty" of the world.
