YOU ARE INVITED TO ATTEND ICADS ANNUAL MEETING VIA ZOOM ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 20th

As set forth in ICADS by-laws, a general meeting of the Member Societies of ICADS will take place annually, usually in November.  At this meeting, the Board will:

  • Report on the activities of ICADS for the previous year.

  • Report on activities being planned or proposed for the upcoming year.

  • Review the progress of arrangements for the upcoming Art Deco World Congress.

  • Provide an Annual Financial Report.

  • Address questions from leaders of each ICADS Society as time permits. Please submit questions and concerns no later than November 13th.

Since ICADS members span many time zones, the meeting will be held from 8-9 AM, Eastern Standard Time, which will permit the largest number of Societies to attend. Please RSVP to contact@icadsartdeco.org to receive the zoom link to the Annual Meeting.

DECO DIALOGUES CONTINUE

The second ICADS Deco Dialogue took place on September 10th and was attended by 17 ICADS Society leaders.  The topic of this session was Building Membership.

A number of interesting ideas were proposed including allowing a member of any one Society to take advantage of reciprocity with other ICADS societies. For example, a member of an ICADS Society wanting to attend an event hosted by another Society would be able to register at the same price offered to that Society’s members, a courtesy that many Societies already extend.

The next Deco Dialogue is scheduled for Saturday, December 3rd, and will focus on building a board and planning for succession.

GLOBAL EVENTS CALENDAR

The new ICADS website has a great resource, the global events calendar: www.icadsartdeco.org/global-events-calendar/. The calendar is a useful way of boosting participation in your society’s virtual events and alerting travelers to your city of in-person events. Submitting an entry is easy, with clear step-by-step instructions provided on the website. The Calendar Committee will review and approve events and post them to the calendar within a few days.

The calendar will only be useful if our member societies participate and share their events. Please make submission to the calendar part of your regular event promotion routine. Most importantly, please share the calendar with your members.

FRIENDS OF ART DECO—A NEW MEMBERSHIP LEVEL

ICADS was initially organized to meet the needs of established, individually incorporated Art Deco Societies. As the organization evolved, a set of by-laws was formalized that provided for two formal levels of membership:

Full Membership: Members (generally formally constituted Art Deco Societies located in a city or state) that pay an annual membership fee and are entitled to nominate candidates for a Board position and exercise full voting rights in selecting the Board. Each member generally maintains a website and social media pages (as does ICADS).

Key Contacts: Generally individuals in cities or regions without an active Society, who could participate in ICADS activities but could not nominate candidates for Board positions or vote for the Board.

In recent years the effectiveness of Key Contacts lessened and ICADS proposed a structure that would permit more individuals to have a meaningful connection to the organization. At the business meeting held in conjunction with the World Congress on Art Deco in Buenos Aires in November 2019, it was proposed and unanimously accepted to replace the Key Contacts membership level with a new group called “FRIENDS OF ICADS.” So, who will make up the FRIENDS group?

MODERNITY COMES TO IRAN:

THE INTERWAR ARCHITECTURE OF TEHRAN

The countries of the Middle East have their own distinctive styles of interwar architecture. Some, such as Iran, contain a multitude of structures derived from European architecture, including many with Art Deco elements.

When Reza Shah seized power over Iran in 1926, he instituted an intensive series of reforms, including architectural expression. During the last half of the 1930s, a number of Russian, Belgian, German, and French engineers were commissioned to design and construct government buildings, such as offices, schools, ministries, and hotels, which were complemented by other designs by Armenian architects. Some structures were finished in brick, others adopted a Bauhaus style with white cement finishes. They generally employed new and innovative forms and included central towers and flat or gable roofs and were constructed of steel or concrete. All contributed to an Iranian national identity. The idea of a university was first proposed in Tehran in 1938 and construction began in 1944 under the supervision of French archaeologist and architect Andre Godard. It took four decades to complete the University, which represents a variety of styles.
