First off, before I start writing my own thoughts, I sincerely hope this letter finds you and your loved ones safe, healthy, and in sync with each other.

This week has been, without a doubt, one of the most difficult times of my recent life. I was actually crying when writing this letter to you now. Last night, I took my cat to the animal hospital because she had been vomiting for a whole day. This morning I received a phone call saying that my cat has to have surgery. Moreover, I heard a lot of sad news around me in these two weeks.

I am a person who enjoys being busy. I usually teach five courses per semester and study for my Ph.D. in the meantime. I would say that I am really good at managing my time and energy. But today, I am exhausted! I thought about stopping writing this letter. I even wanted to ask my students if I could have a break next week.

However, I decided to move forward after tussling with myself for several hours. Writing these letters is one of my goals for this year. I can't easily give it up. I care about my students. What would they learn if I had decided to cancel the class?

Because of life obstacles, our growing stress and distractions can often lead us astray. All of that can make us doubt the process, and when that happens, momentum comes to a halt.

No matter it is writing, or teaching, working, researching, exercising… all of them require consistency to catch and maintain rhythm and flow.

Due to COVID-19, we have been experiencing quite a lot of challenges and difficulties in our lives. I often receive emails from students asking for breaks, homework extensions, and make-ups. I totally understand, and of course, I always do my best to accommodate them.

But I'm writing to you as a person who also needs a little push. A person much like you who has many things on the plate and one who is trying to manage time, energy, and stress all the time.

Life is going on! We need to be positive and keep the momentum.

Today I really just wanted to reach out and encourage you to stay strong and keep that light you have inside of you turned on and turned up. Now is not the time to dim your light. It truly is the time for you to shine it. Let's stay connected and help each other continue to grow.

Sincerely yours,

Fang Shu
