Association of Early Weight Change With Cognitive Decline in Patients With Parkinson Disease |
|
|
A study published in the American Academy of Neurology examined whether early weight change is associated with changes cognitive function in Parkinson disease. A total of 358 patients with early PD were classified into weight loss (decrease of >3% body weight during the first year), weight maintenance, and weight gain (increase of >3%) groups. Researchers found that weight loss in people with recently diagnosed PD was associated with a faster decline of global cognitive function (attention and memory) and executive function (multitasking or problem solving). However, early weight gain was associated with a slower progression of decline. The connection between weight and cognition is not fully understood, but diet and the gut-brain connection may play an even bigger role! Talk with your health care professional to make sure you are meeting the recommended nutritional values for your age and activity level to reduce your chances of losing weight! |
