| En Root |

Today marks OutGrowth's two-year anniversary. It also marks our final En Root issue of Volume Two before we spring forward (oops, wrong season!) into our next En Root chapter. There is a lot to celebrate, but in typical OutGrowth fashion, we are doing things a bit differently. Today, we aren't so much focusing on celebrating the big, well-defined milestones. This November, we celebrate the between-the-milestone stages of life and business.

We talk about carving your own, unique winding path a lot at OutGrowth. After all, personal and professional discovery is at the core of any OutGrowth experience. Farming, design thinking, community engagement and outdoor immersive experiences are phenomenal platforms for that growth to take place.

In my 2019 TEDx Talk, Calling All Misfits, I advocate for what I call a "pathway overhaul," where we can start to experience life before choosing a way of life - where we start to re-imagine the systems we've built and how we've defined success.

OutGrowth was born out of my desire to approach education and business differently. In the U.S. specifically, one of our chief values is "having all the answers." It's how we rank people, in and outside of the office. That mentality has robbed us of that wonderful in-between place - the messy space where things are bit unknown, risky and maybe not as strong on paper. We've discouraged the true learning process, the pivot, the personal transformation. I'm determined to bring that space back, for students and professionals, whether this comes in the form of an outside-the-office internship, a one-day Impact Sprint, a re-imagined corporate retreat or an in-house design thinking workshop for company teams.

At OutGrowth, we are putting our hands together for the people who have dared to ask the question, "Why not?" In this twelfth issue, we feature two fantastic contributing writers who will inspire you to chart your own way. We also give to you our set of curated resources that will help you to look beyond the present to ignite your future. Happy reading.

“It is not the destination, but the journey that matters.”

I’ve heard this many times throughout my life, read it in books, and seen it on motivational posters adorning the walls of doctors’ offices and rock climbing gyms.

It’s a wonderful quote, full of promise and adventure, daring the reader to appreciate the windy road for its twists and turns, not just for the goal at the end. For all its beauty, though, it’s not easy advice to implement.

I was always the responsible one. I did what was expected of me and took what’s considered to be the logical path. I went to college, made connections, and landed a good-paying job that allowed me to flourish as an adult and provide for myself.

But I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t progressing on a path specifically craved out for me.

Becoming an Agent of Social Good

"Society is deeply rutted. We have these expectations about the way things work based upon the way we’ve always seen them “work." It’s hard to do things differently, so we need to push boundaries, take leaps, get uncomfortable, and try new things that sometimes seem crazy in order to break out of those ruts and onto a better path."

'Within each of us are two selves, suggests David Brooks in this meditative short talk: the self who craves success, who builds a résumé, and the self who seeks connection, community, love -- the values that make for a great eulogy. Brooks asks: Can we balance these two selves?'
