As a transgender individual do I have the right to withhold my gender identity on an application for a job or school? |
Hey changemaker, that's a great question! You have the right to withhold this information from employers when applying for a position. If you choose to share this information at a later date in the workplace, you are also welcome to do so without facing any penalties. In the 2020 Supreme Court case Bostock v. Clayton County, it was ruled unconstitutional to discriminate against transgender individuals under existing laws against sex discrimination. This includes making hateful comments, intentionally using the wrong name, or asking disrespectful questions. Withholding your gender identity is a personal choice that everyone has, and whether you share it or not, your rights remain protected and enforced. |

🙋🏽♀️ Civil Rights Pioneer Meet Justin Dart |
Justin Dart, also known as the Godfather of ADA, was born in 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. Justin faced challenges in school due to behavioral issues and ultimately did not graduate from high school despite attending seven different schools. In 1948, Justin contracted polio and was given only three days to live. This experience brought him a sense of love and support from those around him, which was truly uplifting. Although polio left him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, Justin went on to earn both his bachelor's and master's degrees before moving to Japan. While in Japan, he served as the president of Tupperware Japan and made a point to hire women and individuals with disabilities, providing them with a sense of purpose and self-worth. In the early 1980s, Dart was appointed as the Vice-Chair of the National Council on Disability. Alongside his wife, he traveled across the country to listen to the stories of disabled individuals in America and the injustices they endured. Motivated by these experiences, Dart played a crucial role in the legislative efforts that led to the Americans with Disabilities Act. In 1990, thanks in part to Senator Harkin's support, the bill was signed into law, marking the culmination of Justin's tireless advocacy. The ADA remains a vital piece of legislation today, a testament to Justin Dart's enduring impact. To learn more about the ADA and Justin's contributions, click the link below. |

Established after the First World War, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was dedicated to safeguarding the rights of all Americans and was founded by a small group of idealists in response to the Palmer Raids, a period marked by widespread arrests and violence. Since its inception, the ACLU has been instrumental in defending women's rights and advocating for equality among women, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, and other marginalized groups. The organization provides legal assistance through volunteer attorneys, offers educational resources on civil rights to the public, and spearheads national initiatives to address specific issues. Over the years, the ACLU has successfully brought hundreds of cases to the Supreme Court and continues its work today. For more information on the ACLU's mission and how they can assist you, please visit their website using the link provided below. |
