Dear subscribers,

Welcome to the April edition of my newsletter!

As a breast radiologist, my main focus at Women’s and Breast Imaging is on interpreting and diagnosing medical images of the breast, such as mammograms and ultrasound scans. I work closely with other medical professionals, including primary care physicians (GPs), gynecologists, surgeons, pathologist, radiation oncologist, oncologists and breast care nurses to help diagnose and treat breast diseases. I may also work directly with patients to provide counseling and support throughout the screening and diagnostic process.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, and early detection is crucial for successful outcomes. As a breast radiologist, I use my specialised training and skills to identify breast cancer at its earliest stages, when it is most treatable. I am constantly staying up to date with the latest developments in breast cancer screening and diagnostic techniques to provide the best possible care to my patients.

In future editions of this newsletter, I will be sharing more information about breast cancer prevention, screening, and treatment, as well as insights into the daily work of a breast radiologist. I hope you find this newsletter informative and useful, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your support,

Dr Vanessa Atienza-Hipolito FRANZCR

Self-Breast Examination (SBE) is a simple and effective way to check for any changes or abnormalities in your breast tissue. It’s an important part of breast cancer prevention and early detection.

Why is Self-Breast Examination Important?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, and early detection is key to improving the chances of survival. By performing regular SBE, you can become familiar with your breast tissue and notice any changes or abnormalities that may indicate breast cancer or other breast health problems. SBE can help you identify potential issues early on, giving you more treatment options and better chances of recovery.

It’s recommended to perform a SBE once a month, preferably a few days after your period ends when your breasts are less tender and swollen. If you’re no longer menstruating, you can perform the exam on the same day each month.

What Should You Look for During Self-Breast Examination?

While performing the exam, look for any changes in your breast tissue, such as lumps, hard knots, or thickening. Pay attention to any changes in breast size, shape, or colour. Also, watch for any discharge or changes in the nipple, such as inversion or scaling. If you notice any changes, make an appointment with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In conclusion, regular self-breast examination is an important practice for all women to maintain breast health and detect any abnormalities early on. By being proactive and knowledgeable about your breast health, you can take steps to promote early detection and potentially save your life.

Remember, self-breast examination is a useful tool, but it’s not foolproof. Some breast cancers are not detectable by touch, and many breast lumps are benign. Therefore, self-examination should not be a substitute for regular mammograms or clinical breast exams. If you have any concerns or questions about SBE or your breast health, talk to your healthcare provider.
