San Francisco Cohort

During the 2023 Spring semester YVA is honored to be offering a 16 week beginners climate cohort for San Francisco high school students. Students do not have to have any prior experience on climate justice, environmental racism, or environmental classism. Instead, we are looking for students who demonstrate characteristics that show us they are open to learning and joining their peers in taking action. Spots for this cohort is limited to 10 students, so apply as soon as you can!

Meet OMI!

Meet OMI, one of YVA’s Oakland clubs! We asked OMI: What does climate justice mean to you? & What motivates you to be in the climate justice movement? Here are some of their answers:

“What motivated me to join the climate movement is that we need to care about the world and if we have enough support we can change the world.”

Muhannad Alhayani

“Climate justice means fighting for our green community. Also for animals. Our greens need to be saved and protected. I want that for my community.”

Liberty Wells

“I want to be in the climate justice movement because I think the future depends on the actions we make now.”

Help Frick Get To The Nationals!

Dear Climate Justice Allies,

We wanted to ask for your support for a cheer squad from Frick middle school in East Oakland to have the resources to travel to a national cheer competition in Las Vegas at the end of this month. YVA is is supporting this group, many of them YVA members, as they step up, use their voices, command attention and respect, and basically ... take real steps towards getting power.

The squad leader Ms. Morgan has been amazing at connecting the team with opportunities not just to cheer for the sports teams but also to cheer at events like Earth Day, where they supported Environmental Justice in Bayview. YVA organizers are currently working with the squad to interchange knowledge and think about what they want to say with their power and coordination.

Going to Vegas would be transformative for these young leaders.

If you are able to contribute a few dollars, we appreciate it!

Giving Thanks: Maya Media

By: McKinley Greenberg

We have had the honor of being captured in film by Maya Media many times. Through these awesome videos Peter Manchini, owner of Maya Media, has portrayed our messages, demands, and impact at in person actions. Peter has been embedded with activists, making videos while risking arrest since 2011. Currently, Manchini is focusing on personal films. His debut film When Mama and Me Lived Outside has received 16 awards.

There are many things that motivate Manchini to make activist films: the importance of documenting history for future historians, benefiting the morale of those fighting for change, spreading awareness, recruiting more until critical mass is achieved, and combating the spread of corporate news.

We hope you enjoy Maya Media coverage on YVA actions, which you can watch below.

No Coal in Oakland | Weekly SUNDAY Meetings @ 7:00PM

Coordinator: Michelle | michelle@youthvsapocalypse.org

Coordinator: Georgia | georgialovewallace@gmail.com

Join NCIO Here!

The No Coal In Oakland Campaign (NCIO) seeks to organize against the people in power who are putting profit over predominantly BIPOC working class communities by pushing for a coal terminal to be built in West Oakland. Their overall goal is to ensure that coal stays out of Oakland now and forever. Acknowledging the suffocating role that environmental racism plays in these decisions to develop fossil fuel infrastructure, the youth in the NCIO campaign are naming profit-hungry development companies as their enemies and fiercely organizing against them. Organizers in this campaign hope that a win for Oakland will cause rippling effects across the world, so that every community struggling with environmental racism can be coal free!

Coordinator: Hannah Estrada | hannah.estrada@youthvsapocalypse.org

Join Newsletter Team Here!

The YVA Newsletter Team works on creating and building a newsletter to highlight all of our organizing efforts and highlight the advancements Bay Area youth have made in the movement towards climate justice. The Newsletter Team is an essential part of our work because it allows us to reclaim the media that is often controlled by people in power. When we are in control of our own media, we can control our narratives and make sure that our communities are uplifted and empowered! As Malcolm X once said, “The media is the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent.” By working with this team, you can help us reclaim our stories and prioritize our people!
