We planted our first batch of watermelon in a row of dried corn and tomatillos. You have to dig around in the growth to find them. Watermelon need a lot of sun and heat to grow so next year we'll plant these melons in a different part of the field.
A view from our milpa from the other side ... it's a beautiful jungle of grapes, corn, watermelon and tomatillos. All this means is that we're headed into salsa-making season.
These are shishito peppers. They are mild peppers but 1 in every 10 is spicy. You up for a game of pepper Russian Roulette? They should be ready for farmer's markets in about a week.
Eggplants are just starting to flower. This variety is called "Fairytale" which is a petite eggplant with white and purple stripes. They are perfect for marinating or grilling whole. While traditionally thought of as an Italian vegetable, eggplant hails from Asia. Early plants are surmised to have come from Burma or India, but the vegetable has morphed into a multitude of colors, sizes and varieties that grow worldwide.
In addition to watermelons, we are also growing Charentais melons which are a French heirloom varietal known to be super-sweet and super-fragrant with bright orange flesh. We love growing heirloom varieties - it keeps things interesting on the dinner table.
The extreme heat recently means that our cilantro has bolted. No harm. This is when the feathery leaves, white flowers and green buds taste more like the plant's seed, coriander, and less like the younger leaves. A perfect garnish for tacos.
We have a new evening routine: grab a glass of wine and a basket to pick tomatoes.
