As a stressed and down beaten by-product of main stream education, I finally
got the courage to go to college in my later years. I found out the theory of youth and community work and linked it with the experience of practice I gained over a life time. I am now qualified in Youth Work, Inclusive Education and Training, as well as Community Development, and Community Education. I work as assistant coordinator with the Good Lives Project in Macroom supporting Adults between 18 and 65 to get a qualification and access back into education or employment.
We are a home school family with a 12 year old girl who tried main stream and made the choice to leave at 7; and a 5 year old girl who has no interest in going to school as she thinks sitting looking at the teacher will be boring.
I have a huge interest in the Sudbury School model and self-directed learning. It is the way I support the learners I work with and my own children. I was honoured to be asked to be a Trustee and have done a lot of research in progression from Sudbury School to College. I’m looking forward to filling everyone in on my progress and meeting every one again.
