AI Outages: ChatGPT, Claude, & Perplexity Hit by Major Disruptions

On June 4, 2024, the AI landscape was shaken as several major providers, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Perplexity, experienced widespread outages. Users across the globe were left scrambling as these platforms went dark, causing a ripple of frustration and disruption.

The hiccup with ChatGPT started around 7:33 AM PT and was resolved by 10:17 AM PT. Meanwhile, Claude and Perplexity faced similar disruptions, likely triggered by broader infrastructure issues or a surge in traffic from the ChatGPT outage.

Claude bounced back by 12:10 PM ET, and Perplexity saw intermittent availability around the same time. On the flip side, Google's Gemini remained mostly operational, though there were brief user-reported outages.

The sudden downtime left many loyal users anxious and spinning. To be better prepared for future outages, consider these alternative AI tools:

For Research:

●     Anthropic's Claude: A helpful, harmless, and honest AI assistant.

●     Cohere AI: Specializes in robust natural language processing research.

●     DeepMind's Sparrow: Known for reliable and safe information retrieval.

For Image Creation:

●     DALL-E 2 (OpenAI): Advanced AI image generation tool.

●     NightCafe: Offers diverse artistic styles for image generation.

●     Craiyon: Quick and easy image creation, formerly known as DALL-E mini.

●     Midjourney: A text-to-image AI tool that turns text prompts into unique and imaginative images.

There has been speculation about a coordinated attack on AI systems, but no evidence supports this claim. The outages were likely coincidental.

Are Google and Microsoft ignoring criticism of their AI Tools?

Google and Microsoft recently introduced two controversial AI tools, AI Overviews and Windows Recall, facing significant backlash.

AI Overviews: Unveiled at Google I/O 2024, AI Overviews generates summaries of search queries, potentially reducing web traffic and ad revenue for websites. Critics argue this could lead to the shutdown of many sites. Google’s decision to display ads on these summaries further monopolizes ad revenue. The tool has also provided incorrect and potentially harmful information.

Windows Recall:Microsoft’s Windows Recall takes continuous screenshots of user activity and stores them locally, raising privacy and security concerns. Microsoft announced Friday that the feature will now be off by default so users will need to opt-in to use the tool.
