BAYCS Holiday Book Drive!

This holiday season BAYCS is hosting our second Book Drive for the Children’s Book Project to upcycle books for good! All books will be donated to the Children's Book Project, which provides books to under-resourced children. The drive will take place at various high schools around the Bay Area from November 28th through December 16th. They are in particular need of books in Spanish, board books, and graphic novels but all donations are welcome. Please see this link for a complete list of schools participating, and books that will and won’t be accepted.

We cannot talk about the environmental and climate movements without understanding the central role Indigenous people continue to play in its framework, inspirations, history, and future. Prior to colonization, Indigenous people freely practiced and maintained relationships of balance and respect with the land—relationships with deep roots in their spiritual and religious beliefs. It's far time that we recognize and talk about the continuous and vital leadership of Indigenous people—and carry the ongoing conversation beyond Indigenous Heritage month and into a wider context.

A Disappointing Red Wave Brings 2023 Climate Wins

Unexpected outcomes in the 2023 Midterm Elections means several things for climate legislation. A Democratic Senate majority ensures the implementation of Biden’s previous climate laws, but a new Republican House majority obstructs further climate legislation for the foreseeable future. In four new states, governorships and state chamber seats flipped, meaning these states can now pass climate progressive laws. Read more about state-level wins and climate progress!

Environmental Victories Worldwide

Whether that's appreciating new technologies or supporting efforts that have been made in the name of combating climate change, we must not downplay the climate successes that have been happening even in the past few weeks! In just this past month, we celebrate how scientists have come across an egg-cellent discovery of using eggs to filter microplastics, how grassroot farmers from India are finding natural ways to combat climate change, how €15 million was delegated to protect Egypt’s coral reefs, and how EU leaders are tightening the noose on carbon emissions. Not to mention the 25 countries that have pledged to end deforestation by 2030! Let’s all take time to appreciate the steps and actions taken, and depreciate our climate anxiety. Lower Income Countries Affected by Inequalities Need Support with Climate Vulnerability

Lower income countries have a higher necessity for adaptations to ward against climate change but have significantly less funding available. Unfortunately poorer countries that commonly experience the brunt of climate change due to colonialism, exploitation, and environmental injustice cannot source funds to fix. To be fruitful, adaptation support should supplement existing aid, with streamlined conditionality that’s commensurate with the country’s institutional capacity which is what the IMF is encouraging and working toward. U.S. Government Provides $15 Million to Launch Red Sea Initiative

Coral reefs have been in danger because of climate change, however, at COP27, the US government announced 15 million USD would be used to protect Egypt’s Red Sea coral. This would be the largest global blended finance vehicle in history to further fight climate change and is essential to keeping biodiversity in our oceans. This funding will also help to promote ecotourism as well as increase efforts to protect our oceans. They are hosting a virtual and in-person event with speaker Dr. Ash Pachauri, Co-Founder and Senior Mentor. Community Climate Action Day is coming to Oakland! Join California Volunteers at this event and celebration to take climate action and connect with others passionate about the environment and local organizations engaged in climate action work.
