Whats New?

1. I've been working hard on some website updates! Take a look and tell me what you think!  In particular, check out the connect page for some at home self massage videos, and other ways to take your massage beyond the walls of the treatment room.

2. During my website overhaul I was able to transfer my client contacts BUT I lost subscriber preferences in the transfer. So I deeply apologize if you had unsubscribed from my newsletter and are receiving this. Please forgive me and simply unsubscribe yourself again.

3. I am also potentially switching my online booking platform over the next month, so if you notice something different when you go to book online that's why. Please be patient with me if there are a few glitches as I switch over. I also appreciate your feedback, so please let me know if anything is giving you trouble!

4. My online store with herbal oils is live! I'll be adding more products as I go so keep checking back to see what there is, and feel free to ask me if you want something you aren't seeing. I just might have it, or can make it for you!

Herbal Oil Spotlight: Plantain Oil

(Plantago spp.)

The common, weedy plant that you've probably stepped on hundreds of times without realizing it on slightly overgrown lawns and along pathways and roadsides, or disturbed meadows. Plantain, contrary to its name has nothing to do with bananas, but is a low growing plant that can be found almost anywhere.

When most herbalists talk about plantain they are referring to either Plantago major or Plantago lanceolata, wide leaf and narrow leaf plantain respectively. What are its distinctive characteristics? Both species have parallel veins on each leaf (usually 5 or 6) and these leaves grow in a basal rosette (kind of like a bunch of bananas if your stretch your imagination!). When in flower both species also have a central spike covered in small indistinct flowers. You can see them in the photo above.

The leaves and the flowers and seeds are edible, although because it grows in disturbed areas you want to be careful that it doesn't have pesticides or pollution on it. For example, you probably don't want to harvest them from the roadside, but instead from an overgrown lawn behind someones house, or the edges and paths of an organically managed farm or garden.

What about its medicinal properties?

Well, chew up a little bit of the leaves and make a spit poultice and it can soothe an itching bug bite! Or, if you'd rather, buy my plantain oil and keep that handy and apply directly on any itching, burning bug bite, scrape, or rash. Try it on mosquito bites, fire ant bites, bee stings, you name it.

Why does this work? It is because the plant has anti-inflammatory properties, as well as astringent properties which means it will dry or pull things out while also easing inflammation.

Internally it is also said to be a good remedy to clear the sinuses due, once again to its anti-inflammatory as well as antimicrobial properties.

This plant is a great beginner friendly plant if you want to try your own hand at foraging due to how common it is and easy to find. Once you correctly identify it a few times you will start seeing it everywhere. Look for the parallel veins on the leaves as the main distinct characteristic between it and other lower growing basal rosette plants.

You can buy this oil and others in my new online store. Check back often cause I am always adding things to it!
