Hello Friends

This is one of our largest issues of The Sweet Potato. We have listed SEVEN UU election events going on next week. Please feel free to submit more via our new Submissions button, or email uuyarn@uusf.org

Speaking of YARN, we have our new website url - www.uuyarn.org! There you can connect to all our ministries and media, including our election coverage. All our programs are listed on our website, as well as our Facebook page.

Finally, once again my apologies for the lateness of this newsletter. It may soon become a Tuesday or Wednesday publication.

Bests,

UU Mental Health Survey

The mission of the UU Mental Health Network (UUMHN) is to promote inclusion of people affected by mental health issues in the life and work of our congregations and in the society at large. We all know these times are profoundly difficult for many people emotionally for a number of reasons: the pandemic, racial issues, political issues, global warming.

We will be having a strategy session in November to discuss our priorities for working on the most important issues. We are seeking to learn what we can do as the UUMHN to support both individuals and congregations in this time of uncertainty, fear and stress, so as to best focus our efforts to carry out our mission.

We have developed a survey which we will use to determine how to understand the emotional needs of UUs so we can prioritize our work. Please take the survey before November 1

We will share results on our website (www.uumentalhealth.org) when the survey is complete.

Thank you,
Rev. Barbara F. Meyers
President of the Board of the UU Mental Health Network

The 8th Principle

"We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”

The 8th Principle is a proposed and oft discussed addition to the standard UU 7 principles. There is vigorous debate within and amongst congregation's about its adoption. That said, the 8th Principle is really just the beginning of action, rather than the ultimate goal.

It should lead to restoring funding and support for anti-racism trainings for any UUs who want them, as well as starting an anti-racism version of the Welcoming Congregation program that was so effective for LGBTQIA+ awareness and progress.

Many people of color have been attracted by the values and potential of UUism, but their souls have been repeatedly wounded by its whiteness. Let’s make our actions match our values. Let’s be a UU movement that feeds them. That would be spiritual wholeness.

UU the Vote Online Spiritual Nourishment Groups

Wed, November 4 at 9am PT/12pm ET
Mon, November 16 at 5pm PT/ 8pm ET

Join this structured, 75-minute, small group experience, with the intention of making space for bearing witness and finding community. This group is a space for people to share stories from their organizing and their justice work, and to reflect on it while others bear witness. As we share and listen deeply, our bearing witness to one another amplifies the joys we feel, and lessens the burden of the sorrows we bear. These are structured, small group experiences; they are not intended to provide support to people in active crisis.

Gathered Here

Monday, November 9

8:00pm ET/ 5:00pm PT

Here is a monthly online check-in for Canadian Unitarian Universalist young adults.Join other UU 18-35-year-olds on Zoom (a video-conferencing platform) for sharing of joys and sorrows, deeper check-ins, prayerful reflections, and an opportunity to process the events of our lives with a spiritually grounded community. Each month we are joined by a member of the Young Adult Pastoral Care Team.

The global pandemic has made this virtual gathering place more valuable than ever. While so much in our lives is unknown and unknowable, we can find comfort in familiar rituals and faces. By sharing our joys, our concerns, our sorrows, and our gratitudes, we know ourselves to be held in a loving community. Exploring the themes and spiritual practices helps us each remember our own creativity and resilience. We are all in this together, a part of a larger story. These are drop-in style gatherings, so you don’t need to sign up in advance and there is no fee.

On the days you want to attend, just settle into a comfortable spot with your computer or smartphone, sign in to Zoom at the scheduled time, and bring your whole self for the hour and a quarter. (You will need to "register" through Zoom using your email address to access the link)

The full schedule, including Zoom links, for the 2020-21 programming year can be found on our website. We will break in May for CUC National Conferences and in July/August for the summer. Check the Facebook event for the most recent themes and outlines of upcoming calls. You can also sign up to receive a reminder via text message the day of each Gathered Here by texting @cucya to (502) 694-1142. Questions can be directed to Casey Stainsby at casey@cuc.ca.

UUYAM Professionals Call

Tuesday, November 10

5:00pm ET / 2:00pm PT

If you work for a Unitarian Universalist organization and are responsible for a young adult ministry, then you are invited to connect with your peers on our monthly support call! This call is for professionals, those who are employed by UU organizations, be they congregations, regional groups, national bodies, or some other kind of entity. We spend the hour sharing about our programs, working on challenges, stepping back to take in the big picture, and laugh at the incongruous things we encounter while trying to create young adult ministry.

If you want to attend, please email uuyami@uusf.org with your name, where you work, your job title, and what young adult, emerging adult, or campus ministry program you are responsible for.

If you are a UU young adult who leads in any capacity within the movement, then please attend our UUYA Leaders Call, usually on the first Sunday of the month.
