Hi Friends,

Welcome to the July newsletter! This past month has certainly kept us on our toes with some dramatic weather shifts. By the end of June, there were over 100 wildfires burning across the great state of Alaska, with 40 new fires in the last week of the month alone! All this made for some intensely smoky days.

Then came the rain! The rain brought a refreshing change, clearing the smoke, making our air cleaner and our skies clearer. And then it didn’t stop raining…We finally got some much needed sunshine yesterday, but it's pouring once again as I write this.

Enough of that — grab your coffee, tea, or favorite drink, and enjoy catching up on the latest!

Denali Perspectives in August

I've been invited to be a part of a group art exhibit opening in August at Tonglen Lake Lodge. This group show is intended to introduce new Alaskan-based artists to the community of Denali National Park and to its visitors.

The theme for artists was simply "Denali" and what impression that makes on us, with each artist providing 2-4 pieces. Of course my mind went strait to the animals that frequent the Park, and my works will feature a moose, a dall sheep, and a caribou.

My artwork isn't done yet, so enjoy this teaser of the sketches! If you're familiar with some of my older art, you might be able to picture how the jagged black areas will be filled in with a triangulated collage of green paper, creating a stylized and geometric aurora.

Denali Perspectives will open on First Friday August 2, 5-7pm. Artists include Annie Brace of Anchorage, Haley Ray of Wasilla, Christine Kleinhenz of Juneau, and local favorites. Community event organized by Sarah Crowley (Raining Joy Arts).

LoFi Spaghetti Western

One of the artists I follow led me to discover Hermanos Gutiérrez, an instrumental duo with music that “evokes impressions of remote spaces and untamed wild places.”

I typically go strait to some Ludovico Einaudi whenever I need some instrumentals in my life, but I *thoroughly* enjoyed this new Sonido Cósmico album. It straight up sounds like a soundtrack to a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Gift List App

I know it’s only July, but I have started adding ideas into my Gift List app and thought it was worth sharing!

With this app, you can track status of gifts per recipient (whether it’s just an idea, purchased, arrived, or wrapped), and include the prices to stay on budget. It also counts down the days to Christmas (167 today), and shows your total amount spent on purchases to really help you track your spending. Happy gifting!

Consistency with Brand Fonts
(and why it matters)

Branding is much more than just a logo or a color palette; it’s about creating a cohesive and memorable identity that resonates with your audience. One of the key elements in this identity is your choice of fonts.

Your brand fonts are a part of your visual identity. Your Visual Identity is the visual elements that make up your brand; your logo, your colors, your typography, and your images. It visually distinguishes you from your competitors and helps you look consistent.

Here’s why being consistent with your brand fonts is crucial:

Brand Recognition: Consistency in font usage helps in building brand recognition. Just like colors and logos, fonts become a part of your brand's visual identity. Over time, your audience begins to associate those fonts with your brand, making your communications instantly recognizable as you.

Professionalism and Trust: Using consistent fonts portrays a sense of professionalism and reliability. When your branding elements are cohesive, it signals to your audience that your business is organized and trustworthy. Inconsistent fonts can make your communications look haphazard and unprofessional.

Enhanced Readability: Consistent font usage ensures that your content is easily readable. Different fonts have different characteristics and using too many can confuse the reader. Sticking to a set of brand fonts maintains a clear and comfortable reading experience, which keeps your audience engaged.

Emotional Connection: Fonts can evoke emotions and set the tone for your brand’s voice. Whether you want to appear bold and modern or classic and elegant, your font choices play a significant role. Consistency in these choices helps in maintaining the emotional connection with your audience.

Brand fonts should be used consistently on all of your printed materials like business cards, brochures, flyers, menus, garments, etc.. Your brand font should also be used consistently across digital platforms like your website, email newsletters, and social media.

Unfortunately, the value brand fonts bring to your brand recognition is so often neglected, especially on social media.

I get it, between Canva and the many other creative apps out there, creating cute, themed posts is a lot of fun! But the drawback is that you lose the strength of your brand every time you choose a non-brand element.

The Impact of Inconsistent Font Usage

Failing to use your brand fonts consistently can have several negative impacts:

Brand Dilution: Inconsistent font usage can dilute your brand identity. If your audience sees different fonts on your website, social media, and printed materials, they may struggle to form a clear image of who you are and what you stand for.

Confusion and Distrust: When your fonts vary widely, it can confuse your audience. They may question whether the content is coming from the same source or if it’s even trustworthy. This confusion can lead to a lack of confidence in your brand.

Reduced Professionalism: Inconsistent fonts can make your brand appear unprofessional. It suggests a lack of attention to detail, which can reflect poorly on the quality of your products or services.

Weakened Brand Recall: The more consistent your branding elements are, the easier it is for your audience to remember you. Inconsistency in fonts can weaken brand recall, making it harder for your audience to recognize and remember your brand.

TLDR: Consistency in brand fonts is a simple yet powerful way to enhance your brand identity. It fosters recognition, trust, and emotional connection with your audience. On the flip side, inconsistent font usage can lead to confusion, distrust, and a weakened brand presence. By adhering to your brand’s font guidelines, you ensure that every piece of communication you put out, especially on social media, reinforces your brand and strengthens your relationship with your audience.

It's a small detail that can make a big impact on how your business is perceived.
