Here are other news stories you need to know about from this week: 

• What is COP26 and why is it important? Extreme weather events linked to climate change - including heat waves, floods, and forest fires - are intensifying and governments agree urgent collective action is needed. Some 200 countries are meeting at the end of October in Glasgow, Scotland for "COP26,"  a summit on the climate crisis, where governments will make commitments to reduce environmental impact.  BBC has an excellent summary of what you need to know here.  For a primer on what hotel companies are doing about ESG, check our recent post.
• TikTok trends are shaping what you buy, eat and drink.  Even if you are not on it, TikTok has an estimated billion (yes, with a B) monthly users, and according to their own research, TikTok inspires action off of the platform. 43% of users try something or go somewhere new after seeing it at least once on TikTok.  YahooFinance summarizes the industries most impacted by TikTok, while travel is not one of them (yet) and this article in National Geographic Travel explains why and how that might shift.  We plan to dig into TikTok travel, stay tuned!
• On Monday, the US announced lifting travel restrictions in November for vaccinated travelers from 33 countries.  This is great news (!) but as the announcement was not entirely clear as plans are still being formulated, read this excellent explainer from Reuters.

• With its famously resilient economy that has weathered many economic storms, New York City is working to rebuild tourism with more women in charge. Watch our exclusive Zoom panel with Charlotte St. Martin, President, The Broadway League, Marlene Poynder, General Manager, Conrad New York Downtown, Sofia Vandaele, General Manager, Intercontinental NY Barclay, and Becky Hubbard, General Manager, LOTTE New York Palace.
• Columnist Nancy Mendelson makes a case for why we need to challenge "cancel culture."

• Plus, 3 new VIRTUAL events for and featuring women in hospitality. This week Cornell is hosting "Women in Hospitality and Travel: Opportunities, Challenges, and Progress" moderated by Dean Kate Walsh.

Listen Up:  Really enjoyed a new podcast for hoteliers, Top Floor hosted by Susan Barry, which offers tips and stories from the experts who elevate (get it?!) hospitality. There are only five episodes so far, I started with sales and marketing expert Kate Burda which was packed with interesting ideas. Let me know what you think!
