Note from the Director
August 2021
by Patricia Cream
For the Salon Guest Artist show in August, we will have an award-winning watercolor artist. The show is called “Apparitions, The Light-filled Art of
Meg Munro.” Whether it is light on baskets, light through colored bottles, sprinkled light on gardens, or light coming through transparent leaves and flowers, a theme throughout her paintings has been a light in the natural world. The First Friday ARTScrawl Artist Reception will be on Friday, August 6, 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. This show will run through August.
The Featured Artists in August are Amelia “Mellie” Myer and Alison Thomas. Mellie has devoted much of her time attending art classes and painting, both as a skill and as a tool for personal and spiritual development. She loves painting landscapes in oil and abstracts in acrylic. Alison uses glass in a totally different direction: she started incorporating repurposed glass into her mixed media resin art. From there, Alison began creating abstract resin art. Resin adds an illusion of depth and a glass-like layer to her work.
Community Projects: The Gallery ABQ has been given the opportunity to do fundraisers for local community projects with the generous donation of Jeremy Stein’s photography. It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since our friend and art colleague Jeremy Stein passed away. This August we are celebrating his life with another fundraiser. Some of Jeremy’s family and friends will be at the artist reception on Friday, August 6th. Take this opportunity to come and see Jeremy’s art and visit with his family.
During the months of August, we will be selling Jeremy’s framed and matted prints through the gallery to help Roadrunner Food Bank. The gallery will be giving fifty percent of these sales to Roadrunner. On August 6th between 5:30–6:00 p.m., a representative from Roadrunner will be giving a talk about the food bank and how they use the funds they receive from charitable organizations and other donors. Roadrunner distributes food across New Mexico to small food distribution partners, schools, homeless shelters, and anyone who needs help with food. Please join us in helping this local food distributor by buying one of Jeremy Stein’s pieces of photography. You can purchase pieces online at https://www.thegalleryabq.com/jeremysteinstore or by coming to the gallery. We will have 16 x 20" framed pieces hanging at the gallery and a bin of his matted photography.
The Gallery ABQ is becoming more involved in community projects. Starting in July, we became the art sponsor for Tractor Brewing’s Westside location. What does this mean? We have joined with Tractor Brewery to hang gallery members’ artwork, which will decorate the brewery walls. This opportunity gives our artists another location to hang their art, and it lets the community on the Westside get to know who we are and the diverse art we create. We are responsible for all sales and for changing the art out on a quarterly basis. Stop by Tractor Brewery at 5720 McMahon Blvd NW, Building 5, Suite A. Our show started on July 1st.
Call for Artists: If you are a local artist looking for a Contemporary Fine Arts Gallery to show your art, please go to our website https://www.thegalleryabq.com to get more information about our gallery. The application is online. If you are interested, please send in your application, and we can set up a jury date.
