The data on the college admissions is showing breaking trends on what's desirable in a student. The workforce is turning away from the "cookie-cutter" employee, and towards the passionate student. |

The previous century was defined by wars and economic growth. The American economy needed a growing number of workers in a number of set positions.This context meant that a student would go to college to get a "well-rounded" education and then find additional training from their employer, and then stay with that employer for the rest of their life. Having each American trained the same way was extremely benefical for this type of economy. |

In contrast, this century is going to be defined by instability and climate change. The skills needed to survive this era look drastically different than the prior. In this setting, automation is taking out jobs, and the jobs left are highly undesirable. What college officials are beginning to understand is that those who can harness the potential of the gig economy and be flexible with the application of their skillset are going to survive. |

Focus on what keeps you motivated. Later, you will find many applications for your passions but first you have to develop them. |

Highschool is tough, and you GPA might reflect that. But the classes on your transcript which express a clear interest in a certain field matters almost as much (if not more) than the numbers. |

University admissions know what classes are difficult and which are easy, they are looking for candidates who push themselves in a clear track. If your passion is ancient Incans then take that AP History class and don’t fret so much about your bio exam. Develop skills in the area that best express your passions. |

Even if your pictures are totally appropriate, you're not thinking about social media critically enough. Instagram is a tool to highlight your achievements. Post that pool selfie, but don't forget the update about the soccer tournament, or your opinion about the elections. |

In 2018 the University of Chicago announced a move to a test optional admissions policy. Many schools are now moving towards this policy, so you do not have to submit your SAT scores. |
