What an amazing start to the year we’ve had here at Creating Ground!

What's Been Happening

Thanks to University of Greenwich we welcomed over 70 people to the showcase of our latest work.

We shared a dance piece choreographed with Matthew Winston, which focused on the connections we make in our group and how we nurture and uplift each other through the highs and lows.

This was followed by a forum theatre piece co-created with theatre practitioner Erene Kaptani as part of our work around Safe Surgeries with Greenwich Wellbeing Action Team to improve healthcare for migrants.

Then we had a premiere screening of our co-produced documentary, Light the Way, showing the leadership journeys of our Stronger Together Leaders, which was made possible thanks to Critical Social Policy.

The evening ended with networking and nibbles amongst a display of all the artwork produced with our My Creative Skills group, thanks to funding from Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Thanks again Professor Tracey Reynolds and University of Greenwich for hosting the event and their continuous support.

At the end of the event we asked our audience of policy makers, NHS and ICS members, partners, supporters, funders, friends, family and members of the public, to show solidarity and support for our campaigns by raising their hands to form butterflies. We asked if they also believed that communities together can create long lasting change and transform our society,  to join us in leaving the cocoon and become a butterfly with us.

"The symbol of the butterfly that members of Creating Ground have on is telling the story of our journey thus far. As the cocoon went through many unseen struggles lying upside down and eventually came out as a beautiful butterfly that can fly so also was Creating Ground during the covid lock down. As we were going through many different struggles and challenges with pieces of our puzzle, we gained strength. As our journey progresses in our struggle, it made us stronger, wiser and better. This strength gained under the leadership of Laura made us to fly and we shall continue to fly to fulfil our mandate and our passion for change. butterflies remind us that it is never too late to transform ourselves or the community."

Stronger Together Leader, 2023

Thanks to Trust for London our Stronger Together Leaders have been busy co-designing and co-delivering another course in Community Action and Leadership for 10 new ladies starting their community organising journey with us.

Our #NoticeUs campaign continues to progress well as we deepen relationships with Greenwich Councillors, and we were delighted to see some attend our Showcase Event last week.

We were also delighted to be invited to speak about our campaign at the Greenwich Council Housing and Anti-Poverty Scrutiny Panel Meeting last Thursday!

If you also believe those living in temporary accommodation deserve fair and stable living conditions, then please follow and tweet #NoticeUs

What We've Got Coming Up

Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund our extremely talented freelancer Lydia Powell will be putting on her historian hat to run Colours of Greenwich Project. The project will look at how history is shaped by people and how we can shape our history ourselves as migrant women, supported by the Living Refugee Archive.

Please send any referrals our way by emailing Lydia at projects@theground.org.uk
