September in the Soulful Seeds Gardens

September is always a fun month in the garden because there is so much to harvest. The past month was extra special for us because we began to see steady growth at our garden on the Our Place Campus. Highlights from the last month are below.

  • The garden fence at the Our Place Campus is complete, and we have our final perimeter. We expected to have 2.6-acres for the garden and ended up with a full 3-acres to grow food for the 350 families on campus.

  • Over the past month, we began installing our orchard on the Our Place Campus. The orchard will include 100 trees across three mini-orchard sections. These mini orchards include an apple orchard, stone fruit orchard, and cherry row. We planted 45 of the 100 trees in September and hope to complete the job in October.

  • Our co-founder, Earstin Whitten, participated in a food security and racial justice panel at the University of Nevada- Reno. He shared his vision for food justice and Soulful Seeds' role in advancing food justice in the Reno/Sparks community.

  • We hosted two corporate volunteer events with Intuit and AmericanAg Credit. These were fun team building events for the companies and also provided the teams with an opportunity to give back in the community. Contact us if you want to coordinate a corporate event with us.

  • In September we harvested a total of 90 pounds of produce which we distributed across the community, and we hosted 155 volunteer hours.

  • Most of the garden at Saint Mary's is harvested and retired for the season. We filled beds with cover crop or garlic to give us the best possible harvest next year. We still have a small amount of cleanup and will use our fall and winter months to focus on continued development at the garden at Our Place.

We Need Your Support

Become a Giving Tuesday Partner

Tuesday, November 29 is Giving Tuesday and we are looking for corporate partners. We can offer local businesses with a hyper-local initiative to build strong ties to the Reno/Sparks community. We can partner through employee giving, corporate matching campaigns, and volunteer events. Please contact our team if you think Soulful Seeds' mission is aligned to your company's priorities.

Sponsor a Hoop House

We only have two hoop house sponsorship opportunities remaining. Sponsorship will support the purchase and/or installation costs of one hoop house on the Our Place Campus. Contact our team if you are interested.

We are hosting a large community volunteer event at the garden on the Our Place campus on October 15 from 9am-1pm. Our goal is to bring 50 volunteers into the garden to help us plant the remaining fruit trees in the orchard before winter.

Featured Community Partner:

AmericanAg Credit has supported agriculture in Nevada and across the west for decades. A core tenet of their operational plan is giving back to the communities in which they operate. AmericanAg Credit donated $17,500 to sponsor one hoop house at the garden on the Our Place Campus. Through this donation we will extend our growing season and expand our ability to provide fresh food to the families on campus. Thank you AmericanAg Credit!
