COVID-19:

As I write this, the COVID-19 rules/guidelines/orders change by the moment.  There are web sites that can keep you current:

Calaveras County COVID-19 Website

California State COVID-19 Website

From the many contacts, I have had with District 3 residents, and throughout the County, we all have COVID fatigue.  If you need help, please let me know.  By taking care of each other, we will move through it together, whatever our personal belief.

All of us can help our local businesses by doing business locally, be it gifts, dinner to go or nails from the hardware store.  Our businesses are critical to our economy and community, we can help them...

COUNTY PERSONNEL CHANGES:

Two Department Heads will be leaving for personal and professional growth and one will be retiring.

  • Joshua Pack, Director of Public Works will be Director of Public Works in Butte County, and closer to home.

  • Kristin Stranger, Director of Health and Human Services, including Public Health, has accepted a position with Los Angeles County and will be closer to family.  As she told me, “The one thing the virus has taught me is that having a strong local support system is important.”

  • Peter Maurer, Planning Director, is retiring in March.  Peter has taken us though the General Plan update, Cannabis ordinance, and now working on the zoning codes.  He lives in Murphys and is part owner of Hovey winery so we will still see him.

I have enjoyed working with them.  They are true professionals and always willing to meet with residents.  I wish them the best in their new endeavors.

HEMP:

Since I just mentioned Cannabis, Mr. Maurer also presented the Board with an option to ban or not ban commercial growing of Hemp.  The Board supported a ban on growing of Hemp.  The primary reason is the impact to the legal Cannabis (marijuana) growers, such as cross-pollination.  The County has made a commitment to the industry and we need to honor that.  It was not an easy decision, as I generally do not support a ban on an industry.

VOTING 2020:

Voter turnout in the County and District 3 was outstanding.

  • County turnout - 86.6%
  • In Person - 11.5%
  • Absentee - 75%

  • District 3 turnout - 89%
  • In Person - 7%
  • Absentee - 81.9%

All of you are special to me.
