ITINERARY: 4 DAYS IN

ST. THOMAS

Blog Post: The Best Travel Hacks for 2020

Due to the rise of Covid 19 cases in the United States, options to travel internationally are limited for Americans and rightfully so.  At Abena's Flight Deals (AFD) we're on a mission to make travel throughout the African diaspora effortless, so we're sharing an itinerary to a Caribbean destination that doesn't require a passport.  Besides endless natural beauty, the United States Virgin Islands, specifically St. Thomas and St. John, offer unique adventures and more!

This itinerary to St .Thomas will highlight places to experience deep cultural connection, while socially distancing of course, as well as must-see 'gram worthy sites.  We recommend going to St. Thomas and St. John for a long weekend.

Day 1 - Charlotte Amalie

Since most travelers arrive on the island in the early afternoon, there is still an opportunity to get the most out of the day.  We recommend staying at  Mafolie Hotel located near Charlotte Amalie for its epic views and budget friendly price point.  Other hotel options are on the East End and they include Margaritaville, Ritz Carlton, and Sapphire Village. After check-in, consider a brief drive to the waterfront where  Glady's Cafe offers delicious Caribbean fare.  This is also the perfect opportunity to stroll the colorful walk ways/streets of the town and get some shopping done too!  Be sure to interact with locals, safely, throughout your trip. The hospitality of Virgin Islanders is unmatched, so don't be surprised if someone invites you to a local hang out or sailing trip!  To round out your evening, consider a night kayak excursion or relax at the hotel's restaurant.

Budget Basics:

Typical flight prices according to Google Flights from the US: $200 to $350 USD

3 star hotel cost : $150 to $250

Average Hostel cost according to Hostel World: $51/night

Average Airbnb cost : $140/night

Average cost per meals per day according to Budget Your Trip: $32

Taxi's are a suitable option to get around the island, especially if following our itinerary.

Day 2 - Island Hopping Day Trip

Get an early start today and head over to the pristine beaches of St. John.  Consider departing on the first ferry trip of the day or securing a private yacht. Both options have their benefits. Travelers can transport their rental cars on the ferry to freely explore the island.  However, when renting a private yacht or purchasing a ticket for a group boating trip, you can rest assured knowing that the logistics are covered.  Regardless of your mode of transportation, from budget to luxury, make sure you spend a full day exploring the island.  And don't forget to snorkel too!

Some must see beaches on the island include Honeymoon Beach and  Trunk Bay.  If you charter a boat consider visiting Water Island as well which is a favorite of visitors and locals alike. Also, for a unique experience grab a box of pizza from Pizza Pi or tacos at Lime Out.  These are floating bars/boats turned resurants. Below are highly rated excursions to St Johns and information on the ferry:

If you're not too pooped from the day's activities, consider going to Sunset Grille for -- you guessed it -- breathtaking sunset views and drinks.  Dine at the Old Stone Farm House for a unique culinary experience.

Feeling stressed? There’s a beach for that.

Day 3 -  Rest and Relaxation

Sleep in today.  This is a vacation after all.  Once you start your day, head to one of our favorite beaches on the island. We recommend Lindquist, Coki's Point, or Magen's Bay.  Lindquist stands out because it is relatively untouched and on Sundays locals and expats party(safely of course).  The festivities include a floating bar and sound system. Everyone is welcome. Just make sure to tip the bartender/DJ, Sherwin, and tell him Abena sent you!

As mentioned before, Virgin Islanders are so friendly that you might get invited out to dinner after your beach day.  Island life is all about being flexible. So we urge you to stay open.

IG Accounts for Inspiration

Sometimes, the best way to plan your trip is to get inspiration from social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest.  Try searching for repost accounts related to the destination of interest so that you don't have to do all the legwork.  Our favorites for USVI are:

Day 4 - Heading Home

Although you are departing today, many flights leave in the afternoon so you can squeeze in an activity or two before you head home.  We recommend visiting the Ritz Carlton Hotel for breakfast if you are not already a guest there.  Every inch of this place is instagram-worthy!  Consider bringing your bathing suit and lounge by the pool following your meal.  We've notice the restrictions are somewhat lax, however if you prefer reassurance that visitors can use their facilities, email or call.  Just make sure you leave enough time to catch your flight!

Covid 19 Considerations

If you choose to travel during this time, it is worthwhile to consider the public health strategy, restrictions, and number of Covid 19 cases in any given destination.  As of August 11th, 2020, 57 people tested positive for the disease in St. Thomas  and the island has 139 active Covid 19 cases.

As a preventive measure, St. Thomas has temporarily closed most of the night life establishments.  Additionally business and beaches are not opened for their normal hours of operation so consider emailing/calling before your arrival.  Ask a local for insights into events and activities that are occurring during you're time on the island.  Lastly, it is important to note that it is hurricane season for the island from June to November. If you end up booking this flight and or using our itinerary, please hit reply and let us know!

Abena
