Battle of Arbroath and Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo The monks of the Abbey of Abroath appointed Alexander Lindsay, Master of Crawford and Chief of the Lindsays, as the "Bailie of the Regality" who was tasked with dispensing justice. The Master of Crawford as known as the “Tiger Earl” for his ferocity and as “Earl Beardie” for his for his long bushy beard. Crawford abused this post and the monks replaced him with Alexander Ogilvy, 2nd Baron of Inverquharity. On January 24, 1445, Earl Beardie marched to the Abbey with a thousand Hamiltons and Lindsays. Ogilvy mustered his vassals and his allies such as Sir Alexander Seton of Gordon (later Earl of Huntly), Sir John Oliphant of Aberdagie, James Maxwell of Tealing, Brucklay of Gartley, Gordon of Borrowfield, and Sir William Forbes, 1st laird of Pitsligo, second son of Sir John Forbes of the Black Lip, and immediate younger brother of the 1st Lord Forbes of That Ilk. According to George Hay (History of Arbroath to the Present Time, 1876), David Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Crawford and the Master of Crawford’s father, hastened from Dundee to Arbroath and was “desirous to make a last attempt to prevent those hostilities the prospect of which his ‘Tiger' son probably enjoyed. With this purpose he rode between the lines, in order to confer with Ogilvy, when one of the latter's men threw a spear, which struck the Earl in the mouth, so that he instantly fell dead.” The Earl’s death “put an end to all hope of an amicable solution of the difficulty.” The Ogilvies and their allies were driven from the field but rallied about three miles from the town, near what is now the village of Leysmill. That battles resulted in the death of the Alexander Ogilvy, Earl of Crawford; Brucklay of Gartley, Gordon of Borrowfield, Sir John Oliphant of Aberdalgie, and Sir William Forbes, 1st laird of Pitsligo. Sir William's nephew James, later 2nd Lord Forbes, took his revenge. James fought under Alexander Seton, 1st Earl of Huntly, at the 1452 Battle of Brechin, in the Royalist army that included Clan Gordon and Clan Ogilvy. They defeated Alexander Lindsay, now 4th Earl of Crawford. Learn more here: https://www.clan-forbes.org/post/battle-of-arbroath |

Botanist Katherine (Kate) Mary Furbish Maine botanist Katherine (Kate) Mary Furbish (1834-1931) was descended from Battle of Dunbar prisoner William Forbes whose name was recorded as “Furbish” when he was shipped to Boston in 1650 and then indentured in Kittery, Maine. Between 1870 and 1908, Kate Furbish traveled thousands of miles across Maine painting, collecting, and classifying plants. This resulted in over 4,000 sheets of dried plants and ferns, and included sketches of Maine’s 500 mushrooms. She discovered two new plants that now bear her name: Pedicularis furbishiae or Furbish's lousewort and Aster cordifolius L. var. furbishiae. Cothiemuir Hill: Natural Burial at Castle Forbes If you feel a strong connection to your Clan Forbes heritage, you may wish to spend eternity in the land of your ancestors. Cothiemuir Hill is a natural burial ground on the estate of Castle Forbes near Alford, Aberdeenshire in Scotland. The Gaelic name is based on the word “corthan,” a small stone circle or “corth,” and “muir,” meaning moor. The hill does ineed include an ancient Pictish stone circle and overlooks the hills of Bennachie, or the mountain (ben) of the ancient Pictish land of Cé. Prior cremation is preferred since the remains contain no residue from embalming chemicals. The site is open all year round during daylight hours and no appointment is necessary. Lord Forbes would also be available to provide a guided tour.

A Forbes by Any Other Name You do not need to have a surname of “Forbes” to be considered a part of Clan Forbes! Anyone with a male or female ancestor with a birth surname with a spelling variation of Forbes or any of the recognized septs or associated families can also connect with Clan Forbes. Our septs include Berry, Fordyce, Michie, and Watt. Some backward-looking academics dismiss “septs” as a way to increase membership. However, forward-looking clans such as Forbes embrace the newer traditions of septs, clan tartans, and women claiming the clan of their choice as ways to help more people to connect with their Scottish heritage. While ancient tradition dictates that women must join the clan of their husbands, at least seven women have been recognized by the Lord Lyon as chiefs. Clearly, we can embrace the past while not being bound by it. In the words of our clan chief, Malcolm, Lord Forbes, “In this troubled world, I think there is every reason for encouragement to be given to anyone who would like to be associated to our peaceful clan where grace is our guide.”
