Introducing Your New Monthly Newsletter!
It's been pretty apparent to me that I've tried to have some consistency with sending out newsletters, and I've clearly failed at it. I'm not sharing that in an attempt to shame myself, but it's just the reality here. I know myself well enough to know that in order for me to really stick to something, I need to create some system to keep me accountable. So I figured that the best way to do that would be to select a specific time and stick with it.
I initially thought about making it coincide with the lunar cycle, but as many people use those dates, I didn't want to overwhelm your inboxes. I was trying to think of other options, and then I thought, "Why not send it out on my favorite number? The 13th!" A few days later I realized that this month lands on a Friday. Perfect! What better day to initiate this than on OCTOBER, Friday the 13th!?
A Quick Little "Friday the 13th" Background
It's pretty well known (from my American perspective at least), the number 13, and specifically Friday the 13th is seen as being a "bad luck" day. Honestly, there were quite a few Friday the 13th's in my youth that involved my family getting locked out of the house, and my brother and I needing to climb through doggy doors to get back in... But I've always loved the number 13 anyway. Likely it calls to the annoying contrarian inside of me.
I never really understood why there was such fear and superstition around it, as a kid I just took everyone's word for it. Looking into it now I found unsurprising religious and mythological origins, the "unluckiness" stemming from Judas being the 13th Apostle to show up at the Last Supper, which was held on a Friday. In Norse Mythology a similar dynamic was drawn with the 12 Norse Gods who held a dinner party, while the 13th uninvited god, Loki, crashed the party and had the Norse god of Light, Baldur, killed with a mistle-toe tipped arrow.
In a Teen Vogue article featuring Bri Luna from The Hoodwitch, she shares how the number 13 is steeped in femme adoration. It's tied to the number of times we menstruate throughout the year and the 13 phases of the Lunar cycle. And Friday, well, is historically tied to the "Day of Venus," goddess of love, beauty and desire. All attributes that typically are associated with the "feminine."
