Towards Health Equity: Saving Lives of Black Mothers and Infants

January 13, 2023

Nelson Scott* presented to the emergency room on his thirty-second birthday. A tall Black man with an athletic build and a clean fade haircut, he had the manners and the accent of someone raised in the South. He had recently graduated from law school in Texas and was on vacation in Los Angeles to celebrate.

Life or Death: Which would you choose?

Black women are seven years older than their biological ages. They are three to four times more likely to die in childbirth, experience debilitating chronic illnesses, and die earlier. Highly educated Black women are seven times more likely to die in childbirth than Caucasian women with an eighth-grade education. And Black babies are more likely to die before turning one-year-old. While these statistics are frightening, they are true.

Sister-to-Sister: International Network of Professional African American Women, Inc. will not stand by as this public health crisis continues to destroy Black families. Our Colorado-incorporated, tax-exempt public charity is taking action to help eliminate disparities in health and healthcare. We invite you to join us. You can by attending the private screening of Aftershock, a documentary that clearly shows the destruction caused. And for those residing in the metro-Denver area of Colorado, you can show support by attending Sister-to-Sister, Inc.'s February 25, 2025 educational fundraising gala. Info regarding both events is below. Aftershock is a hybrid event free to the public. To register, use the EventBrite link in the marketing publication below. Contact us at info@sister.to.sister.org, if you would like to join us virtually. We have limited tickets, so act quickly and by Monday, January 16th.
