Planetary Pearl of the Month

Accreditation Canada will be adding sustainability language this summer to the new governance standards for all health and social service organizations.

Ask your leadership what they are doing to make your facility greener. This could be a game changer!

Healthcare Workers in Action

Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario  (CHEO) announces their Kick the Carbon program! The program strategy intends to reduce the hospital’s greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2025.

“Climate change is an escalating worldwide disaster that all our children are going experience in its fullest, and healthcare is a major contributor to this problem. CHEO’s "Kick the Carbon" initiative is a bold and comprehensive initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of pediatric healthcare to zero.  It’s not going to be easy; all of society has become completely reliant on fossil fuel consumption, and maintaining a high quality healthcare delivery will require finding better ways of doing things. We at CHEO have started with tackling energy, however transportation and procurement and waste are currently all under the microscope.  We will leave no stethoscope, no catheter, and no bandage unturned.”

PEACH Project Updates

Trees for Health - Ontario: We are working with Forests Ontario, Landscape Ontario, Trees for Hamilton, Trees for Life, Eco health Ontario, and One Bench One tree to create a new provincial health care Forest! We will put shovels in the ground in October and will be planting over 100,000 trees at health facilities across the province over the next 10 years.

Ask your facilities manager if your facility is willing to participate

Trees benefit human health in many ways and bring beauty to a facility.

We want to plant trees in recognition of the health care heroes in Ontario.

PEACH of the Month

Calling attention to the wonderful work our own PEACH members are doing!

"Masks. They're everywhere - on the ground, laying about the street - we've come to accept this as "the new normal", as we crawl our way out of this pandemic.

Eight or more masks a day, times 10 staff, times 5 days a week, times fifty weeks a year - how many masks get dumped into landfill from just the single dental clinic I work in? And how many more when you multiply this by how many clinics globally? Particles of microplastic invade my sleep, and our air, our water, our food supply.

I had to change this - and so I did. I influenced multiple dental and medical clinics throughout Ontario to collect their masks, and other single use polypropylene PPE, and take them to a recycler in Kitchener.

Be the change, because our planet depends upon it!"
