Virtual "Meet the SMOB Candidates" Town HallFebruary 7, 2023 7:00-8:00 p.m.Registration closes: Feb 5, 2023 MASC member schools attending the Legislative Session have an opportunity to meet the student member on the state Board of Education (SMOB) before the conference. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and be an educated voter! Information about the candidates is posted on the MASC home page. Students may register themselves for this event. | | |

MASC AwardsDeadline: 5:00 p.m. Saturday, February 11, 2023 Time is running out to nominate an advisor, principal, or student for a MASC award or recognition! Please note that the middle and high school principal and advisor of the year awards must go through the regional organization (except for counties with no regional organization). Note: The Felix Simon Award for Leadership and Service is completed by the school and goes directly to MASC. This is a recognition award for school student councils. MASC awards and recognitions are open to all MASC MEMBER SCHOOLS.

Convention Workshop PresenterDeadline: February 8 Applications to present a workshop at the convention are open to ALL students and advisors from MASC member schools attending the Convention. MASC Convention March 22-24, 2023Registration Opens Feb. 15 Closes: 11:59 p.m., Feb. 28 As we continue our MASC 2022-2023 theme of “The Magic of MASC: Spellbinding Leadership” the 2023 Convention of the Maryland Association of Student Councils (MASC) promises to be a wonderful experience for student leaders from all over the state as students have the opportunity to further their leadership experience with MASC for the year. What a great way to end the year and start planning for the next year. |

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the contract with the Convention hotel, MASC CANNOT extend the registration deadline. Please start NOW to distribute materials and get your registration together. In addition, schools are limited to only the number of delegates allowed by their membership. See the membership list here to see how many students your school can register for the convention. Remember - only school advisors or administrators can register the school delegations! |

In addition to taking action on any tabled item from the Legislative Session, among other things, you will meet the MASC officer candidates, participate in some committee meetings and other breakout discussions, and hear an invited guest speaker. | | |

MASC 2023-2024 Officer ApplicationsFebruary 1-18, 2023 Qualified student leaders interested in running for a MASC office (president, 1st vice president, 2nd vice president, and treasurer) should carefully read all of the qualifications, review the 2023-2024 draft calendar (time commitment), and discuss transportation arrangements with parents. MASC has successfully transitioned back into in-person events this year. Although our executive board meetings also have a virtual option, it is expected that our officers attend all meetings in person. Join us virtually to become an advocate for empowerment and inclusion across the state! This year, we will focus on the intersectionality of racial and gender discrimination in leadership. Hear from a panel of inspiring leaders, converse in productive Q&A sessions, and meet awesome student leaders from across Maryland- all from the comfort of your home! February Service Spotlight: Celebrating Black History Month Black History Month is an annual celebration of the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans to the advancement of the United States and the global community. This month MASC is encouraging school and regional student councils to honor the legacy of African Americans and recognize the progress that has been made in advancing racial equality. As an individual, there are a number of ways to participate in Black History Month.

#ICANHELP and Digital4Good - 2023 is already full of opportunities to use digital for good! #ICABHELP is starting the year off strong with events, classes, workshops, and our social media community. All of the resources are available to help you engage students in digital citizenship. MARYLAND Y YOUTH & GOVERNMENT - High school students: A program specifically designed to give high school students a hands-on lesson in how government works. Action required before February 11, 2023 NatStuCo: National Council of Excellence - Awards recognize and celebrate middle and high school Student Councils that meet high standards and demonstrate evidence of student service, leadership, voice, and engagement. Deadline February 15, 2023 National Civics Bee - Middle School Students (Baltimore, Frederick, Howard, Harford, Washington Counties, and the Crofton Area) This competition encourages young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. Entries are due February 24, 2023 Invent2Prevent - is a High School student-led, peer-developed initiative to prevent targeted school violence! Sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center for Prevention Program and partnerships (CPS), high school students create and activate their own peer-developed initiatives, products, and tools to prevent targeted violence and help create safe schools and communities. MyImpact Challenge - MyImpact Challenge is a civic engagement contest hosted by the Bill of Rights Institute. Student service projects can win up to $10,000, with $40,000 in total prizes available to students and teachers. Deadline: May 21st
Distinguished Student Leaders: High School Students - A rigorous and challenging skill- and knowledge-based recognition program created to identify outstanding individual student council leaders in high schools. NA4SA Resources: The National Association for Student Activities (NA4SA) is a GREAT advisor-focused organization offering free webinars, free resources, and conferences. Covid Test Kits: You can still get some free test kits from the government - also, health insurance companies offer free test kits each month. Work2BeWell: is a digital wellness program focused on positively impacting the emotional well-being of teens and promoting mental health. Check out a ton of free resources! |

Maryland Higher Education Commission – Deadline: March 1, 2022. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Maryland State Financial Aid Application (MSFAA) - for students who enroll at a Maryland community college. Horatio Alger Association National ($25,000) and State ($10,000) scholarship programs. Deadline March 15, 2023. These scholarships are for high school JUNIORS. Includes online seminars (college application process, time management, study skills, and more!), attendance in April 2023 at National Scholars Conference in Washington DC. (all expenses paid), and SO MUCH MORE! |
