We read and watched several books & videos about Seasons and why leaves change color in the fall.

Big Questions of the Week

What makes the leaves green?

  • Chlorophyll

What food do the leaves make for the trees?

  • Sugar

Why do leaves change color in the fall?

  • To prepare for rest over the winter.

Name another word for a tree "sleeping" in the winter time.

  • Dormant

Encourage your child to name a place where the leaves don't change color.

  • One place we talked about was Florida and palm trees.

Great Reads From the Week to Discuss with Your Child at Home ...

  Shared Poem

Week 11's shared poem was "Candy Corn". A copy of the poem came home with your child on Friday. We focused on finding rhyming words, describing words, and SNAP Words.

Have your child read the poem to you and find all of the words to describe the candy corn.

  Shared Reading

Week 11's shared reading was "We're Going on a Leaf Hunt". The book helped prepare us for our own leaf hunt that we went on on Tuesday.

Later in the week the kids practiced acting out the book while I read and by Friday they were reading along with me.

Ask your child where the children went to go hunt for leaves.

  • Mountain

  • Forest

  • Waterfall

  • Lake

Ask your child what was the repeated phrase in the book

  • "We're going on a leaf hunt, we're going right away. Let's find colorful leaves, it's a WONDERFUL DAY!"

Ask your child what animal the children ran into in the end.

  • Skunk

Fiction Read Aloud

One of our close read alouds this week was "Leaf Man". We read the book a few times to help us generate ideas for our own leaf creatures we created on Friday.

Ask your child about some of the things in the book that were created out of leaves.

  • Man

  • Geese

  • Mice

  • Fish ... to name a few.

Ask your child what they created out of their leaves.

Nonfiction Read Aloud

Our Learn About the World/ Nonfiction Read Aloud this week was "Why Do Leaves Change Color?"

Ask your child something they learned from the book.
