Slice of Life

When my daughter became engaged and decided to plan her wedding, everyone in our family and her husband's family were so excited.

She is my first born, and I wanted  her wedding perfect for her. We searched affordable venues, and I looked also for horse and carriage rides, and more. Everything was out of my budget!

More than anything I wanted my daughter to feel like a princess that day. Someone who was cherished. Someone who was loved.

We were blessed with the perfect venue which was free. Her in-laws were active in the school/church where it was held, and my daughter worked at the school for a couple of years as well.

Still, there was that something missing that I wanted for my daughter to know how precious she was to me. Remembering a beautiful tradition one of my friend's had in her family of a wedding runner, I called on my friend for help.

With my friend's help, we sewed a 30 ft wedding runner for my daughter to walk down the aisle on. It was all hand sewn, and hand painted to reflect our family name and our Scandinavian heritage which was so important to us all.

I don't think my daughter even noticed it the day of the wedding as she was so focused on her handsome groom. One day though, I pray that she and her siblings will find it precious to see it grow with each of their names on the runner, and their children and grandchildren too.

Prayer and Savings Tip:

My daughter wanted her wedding to be simple, elegant, and understated. She wanted it to be on our family farm, but the logistics of that were too expensive for our very limited budget.

After praying for a way to incorporate the farm where she, her siblings, and cousins grew up playing together, we brought the farm to the venue.

We cut the lovely, elegant branches of her grandmother's walnut tree to put in all of the vases on the tables. After adding wildflowers and ribbon they were beautiful.

We put them atop linen table cloths, along with cloth napkins, and plastic ware that looked like fine silver. It was truly an elegant affair. God is so good!

Take advantage of the natural foliage around you when decorating the church and reception venue for a wedding.

Simple and less can be quite elegant and more. Try using ivy or another elegant plant that drapes over small planters.

Purchase plain, inexpensive planters, soil, and a few cases of plants to create lovely arrangements.

They can be used at the church and then taken to the venue to complete the decorations there.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
