I am Woman
I am ancient as time
As mystical as a dark summer's night
I am as seductive as the moon in all its glory
I am woman
Afrikan woman
It was from my womb that nations came
I was praised
Anointed and given names like Madonna and Venus
I gave birth to the first doctors
Astrologers, mathematicians
I gave birth to the writers of letters
I am woman
Afrikan woman
These hips gyrated to the rhythm of the drum
on the battles of the Nile
My beauty enchanted Pharaohs
Energised warriors
I walked out of the abyss with my man at my side
I am woman
Afrikan woman
With these breasts I suckled prophets
Prophets like Jesus, Mohammed Buddha
Because I knew myself then
I understood the sacred wisdom
I am teacher
I am comforter
I am creator
Because I was blessed as the first giver of human life by the Supreme Being
I am woman
Afrikan woman
With these hips i serenaded Shaka of the Zulu
My sons I blessed and sent to the four corners of the earth
Before Columbus knew his name
I am woman
Afrikan woman
These arms rocked and comforted philosophers
I gave Aesop the Ethiopian his first fables
Fables which were scattered around the world
Giving a moral order to generations
I am woman
Afrikan woman
Come worship at my shrine
