The PEACH Press

Planetary Pearl of the Month

Did you know… the number one thing you can do for your carbon footprint in a primary care office is to tackle polypharmacy?

The literature suggests that we over-prescribe medications by as much as 20-30%. And the contribution of medications to our total office footprint is 61% (Lancet, Imogen et al , 2021).

By decreasing prescription meds by 10%, we can decrease greenhouse gasses by more than the entire building energy envelope of 5% .

Healthcare Workers in Action

"Speaking at climate rallies is an incredibly empowering experience. Growing up I recall being so moved by hearing people speaking about topics they are passionate about. To be invited to share my own motivations and concerns and hopes for our collective future to a crowd of people who are worried about the same things for their own reasons is such a unique experience. I hope it's as motivating for those listening as it is for myself"

PEACH Project Updates

Ontario Healthcare Sustainable Procurement Working Group

This group is looking at ways to impact the supply chain of the healthcare system.  In Canada, the products we buy and consume within healthcare make up the majority of our carbon footprint.

We are co-chairing a provincial working group which is looking at how to make procurement for hospitals more sustainable in Ontario.  We will be sending a letter, a signal, to suppliers that RFP contracts will include sustainability language very soon. We are also looking at upcoming contracts which would lend themselves to including sustainability language.

If you are a procurement lead and are interested in joining this group, please let us know!

Pharmaceuticals in the Environment: Impacts on non-target options

Join the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care, PEACH Health Ontario, and CASCADES for an interactive webinar with Dr. Gigi Wong.

In this one-hour session Gigi will describe how pharmaceuticals enter the environment; detail the environmental classification for pharmaceuticals and the properties of persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity; as well as provide one example of wildlife that has been negatively impacted by the use of pharmaceuticals.

PEACH of the Month

“Giving spotlight to our very own PEACH members”

“I grew up connected to nature and concerned about the environment since early childhood. Over the decades despite being immersed in a career in medicine, I couldn’t let go of my growing planetary angst that patients, family, friends and most of our living world were all threatened. This was galvanized with the birth of my first child. I literally held in my arms the next generation who would bear the burden of environmental harms created by those who came before.

As the climate crisis rapidly evolved I increasingly felt the need to do more beyond taking individual climate action. But I also felt held back by the constant demands of a busy surgical practice and raising children.

Until a moment of realization several years ago that the two previously competing spheres of health versus climate had merged into one deeply combined crisis. Since that moment, far from posing an obstacle, acting as a physician was suddenly transformed into the most powerful opportunity for climate action through the lens of planetary health.

To grow my personal skills and impact, I have since engaged in multiple trainings including Climate Reality Leadership Corps certification; CASCADES Fundamentals of Sustainable Health Systems; CAPE's Advocacy and Mobilization Program and the Harvard affiliated Climate Health Organizing Fellows Program. My work naturally led to joining the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) where I now serve as Ontario Regional Chair. I also serve as Co-chair of the Ontario Climate Emergency Campaign, an environmental democracy partnership of nearly 250 multi-sector organizations including PEACH. With a deep personal interest in planetary health advocacy and action around policy, democracy and education, I am grateful for this journey and for all the incredible people I have the privilege to work with along the way.”
