WASTE AS RESOURCE

To our fellow Earth-lovers,

How are you, dear ones? We're socked in with rain and fog. Sipping turmeric hot cocoa & running out barefoot between down pours to sow seeds in the wet, soft soil.

Since we spoke last, the most miraculous thing has happened! Shyama Bungalow is fully renovated and looking so dreamy with her arched doorways, blush-tone lime-wash walls, jungle-green velvet couches, hanging cane chairs & creeping plants. The house was christened with our first Permaculture in Practice Residency on Nov 18-21 and it was the most thrilling success. Ten folks coming together to learn, laugh, sink hands into the soil & form friendships over organic, rainbow meals. All of the reviews were glowing & the whole thing has us feeling damn warm & fuzzy inside. Permaculture for all!

This newsletter dives into waste as resource. From what happens with root-die off when we prune a tree to how to make use of all those fallen leaves around us. Plus lots of fun bonuses!

Ps. There are 5 spots left in our Dec 16-19 residency & dates for January 2021 (20th-23rd) are now bookable.

With all the warmth of our woolen socks,

Laura and Kunal Khanna

PLANT IMMUNITY MATTERS!

Terrace & balcony gardeners are often burdened by bizzare pests and puzzling crop failures. We often the questions like "what do to about the white spots on my cucumbers?" or "why do the kerela stay so small and turn yellow quickly?"

The silver bullet for all urban growers is home-made compost.

Learn why this waste-to-resource brown gold is essential for growing healthy plants and how the immune system of a plant is curiously similar to ours.

PLANT HEALTH 101

DON'T WASTE THOSE LEAVES

Leaves are falling all around us and are hugely underutilized by the home grower. Around our neighborhood, they are swept up as fuel to burn rubbish :( In most urban housing societies, they get collected and tossed out!

Every dried leaf is potential carbon house of fertility for your garden.

Leaves are essential for home compost bins & worm farms to provide that carbon aeration. They also function to cover the soil of garden beds and make for way healthier soil.

MULCH 101

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW

Tree root systems function in sublimely, mezmerizingly beautiful ways. They even talk to each other ;)

Did you know that when a limb of a tree is broken or cut, a paralleled amount of root dies off below ground. That root becomes food for the trillions of soil-building microorganisms below.

Permaculture in Practice Residencies are our new favorite thing.

What folks are saying: "Laura & Kunal are warm and welcoming people. They have a beautiful vibe and a great vibrant energy. I could not have dreamed of a better course or better hosts. They are wise, fun, sweet & hilarious. Loved the whole vibe! I would not change a thing!"

GET AMONGST IT!

Thanks for reading! Time for another groovy playlist. This one is, shamelessly, 7 hours worth of Laura's most repeated jams. If you're on Spotify, enjoy!

Ps. planning for next years' ALT EFF (All Living Things Environmental Film Festival), which will be LIVE, in-person in Panchgani in November 2022, is on. We're hiring for a full-time graphic designer! Applications open till Dec. 15. Apply here!
