Fall is a busy time for all of us with lots happening!

I was thrilled to be part of a recent  The Good Food Tour sponsored by Lanark County Tourism. It was great to talk 'maple' with Toronto-based photographers/ writers/ vloggers from Travel Mammal before they sampled maple-infused food and drink as they ambled through Almonte.

This gorgeous Fall was jam-packed with football, hockey and track & field, enjoyed by Grandboys. The Fall highlight is always the Thanksgiving gathering. It's so exciting to have the whole gang together. Fun, Food & Family with lots of teasing and storytelling.

Sugarmakers and parents (Scott and Brenda) of Triple Trouble celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary.

Brenda set off on a 2-week adventure to Scotland. Scott and associates were in charge of the three boys, Triple Trouble. We are almost sure that they ate three times (or more) each day, arrived on time to school most mornings, and activities were attended (at least the ones we remembered).

Christmas and Spring happen simultaneously at Fulton's. Production of maple butter, maple granulated sugar, maple BBQ sauce, maple mustard and maple sugar candies is in high gear, ready to fill the Maple Gift Shoppe shelves, online/ wholesale orders, and the shelves at Cedar Hill Christmas Tree Farm.

Sweet maple wishes to you,

Cedar Hill Christmas Tree Farm Opens November 12

Owned by Shirley's daughter Pamela and her husband Grant Martin, Cedar Hill Christmas Tree Farm opens daily for the season on Tuesday, November 12.

Cut your own Christmas tree or choose one already cut for you. Shop a wide array of gorgeous wreaths (all handmade on site), Christmas decor and ornaments, mitts/ toques and Fulton's products. Café Claus has a yummy assortment of soups, chili and sweet treats for purchase.

Take a tractor and wagon ride to cut your own tree (they can shake and wrap it for a nominal fee), take pictures, enjoy the sliding hill once the snow arrives, climb on the straw play structure, sit by the bonfire and sip hot chocolate. Come in from the cold and enjoy a cup of something warm and a sweet treat in front of the fire. It doesn't cost a thing just to visit. Make it an annual family outing! For more details, please visit their website.

Looking Back on Fall Seasons of the Past

It was a time to celebrate. The harvest was off the fields and the days were shorter so the work days were shorter too. It was a time to repair machines, tidy up the barns and visit the Sale Barns to either buy or sell cattle.

Sale Barn day in Galetta and sometimes Cobden (our cousins owned the sale barn there) was a special day for Dad and I each year.  A great home-cooked lunch was enjoyed with the barn aroma all around us.

Lessons were taught on how to choose the best calves or yearlings, ones that would gain weight efficiently and be ready for market. Another life skill taught was the ability to judge the other bidders' eagerness to purchase. As you were bidding, a watchful and seasoned eye could tell you when the other person was about to stop bidding.

After years of being warned  to NOT raise your arm, don't wave to anyone and don't even scratch your nose, I was finally given the green light to start buying, with Dad advising along the way.  I still remember that day. Dad went to chat with friends and have a piece of homemade pie in the kitchen and left me to buy six yearlings. I was probably 14 or 15 years old and I was in charge of spending money wisely to ensure a profit the next year.

The lesson of responsibility and the feeling of being trusted ensured a growth in confidence.

One of the best parts of the Sale Barn days was the homemade pies enjoyed with the not-so-subtle barn aroma. Nice memories.
