Magazines I am often asked where I get all my ideas for new classes from. Some come direct from student requests or suggestions, some from seeing a new range of fabrics and some from quilt shows or other exhibitions. However, a good source of inspiration is the perusal of quilt magazines. There are a number of different ones on the market and each has its own particular style and target audience. Whilst you can buy them ‘as you go’ in some supermarkets or stationers like WHSmith, I like to take out a subscription. This means they pop through my door every month or every two months and give me a great excuse to sit down quietly and have a good read through. |
If you prefer, many magazines now offer online subscriptions as well so that you read them on your phone, tablet or computer and then just print off any patterns or templates you are interested in. You can also access subscriptions to magazines from a range of other countries that offer an interesting insight to how our craft has evolved and is developing in different parts of the world. |

You will have seen that both Jayne and I have had quilt patterns published recently in British publications. Mine in Todays Quilter and Jayne in Quilt Now. Looking through magazines is a really good way to get a brief introduction to both contemporary and traditional quilters and if you like what you see then there will usually be a link to where you can find out more information. For example: I have recently come across Tia Curtis, Susan Smith and Christopher Wilson-Tate. All artists I would never have heard of unless I’d seen their feature in a magazine. Magazines are also a good source for new quilt shops. If I am travelling to a new place – either in the UK or abroad - I have a look at the listings in the magazines for places I can make a quick visit to. After all, it would be rude to be so close and not pop in! Also, if friends or relatives are visiting another country, I can make a cheeky request for them to bring me back a surprise piece of quilting fabric or maybe a local quilting magazine or two! I like to change my subscriptions every couple of years so that I get a broad mix of styles and don’t become complacent. Also, there are often special subscription offers giving free gifts and/or money off savings so it’s good to change it around and take advantage of these offers. Look on-line to see what’s on offer. My current favourites are: |

Inspirational Quotes Henry Ford - Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young. Students will often say that they have had a really nice day sewing and it made me reflect on how happy being able to sew in good company makes us. As I was thinking about this, two quotes came to mind.... |

Happiness is not a destination, it’s a way of life - Edmond Mbiaka and Happiness is the balance between too little and too much - Channing Pollack So I say let’s not beat ourselves up because we think we have accumulated too much fabric or too many projects to do, let’s just sit back, relax and enjoy the journey! |
