Winter 2018 Newsletter

I had an amazing 2017!

In 2017 I focused on producing new work with a mission to find gallery representation and always with a mind on future exhibitions. Here is a recap of my year:

The summer began with a group exhibition at The Cliff Dwellers Club in Chicago, curated by Ruth Aizuss Migdal. The exhibition was a opportunity to show my current sculptures. The show was well attended, it attracted a dynamic group of patrons interested in my art practice and I had an opportunity to connect with them and talk about my process. I was beyond honored to be visited by contemporary art powerhouses Nick Cave and Richard Hunt.

Read a Hive’s teaser of the exhibition closing in the Visualist, and view or download a portfolio of my work from Issuu.

Last fall I was incredibly honored to have been represented by Hive Contemporary during the 2017 SOFA Chicago. The Gallery selected five of my sculptures including a new cast bronze wall piece, Victory, which I specifically created for the show. You can view, Adaptation, another of the selected sculptures, in a posting by Hive’s curator Jeanne Joseph.

The exhibition was a success and I celebrated with a closing party at my studio. If you missed SOFA or the Open Studio event, you could view a digital portfolio of my work here.

As soon as December arrived I installed a commemorative sculpture to the Loyola Business School, a commission I had worked on through summer and fall.

I wrapped the end of the year with a visit to Art Basel Miami and the expansion of my studio to include a pattern making shop. I inherited the equipment from my Grandfather, who established in me an enduring respect for craftsmanship at a young age. I was honored and humbled that these tools he used for his lively-hood for so many years be passed on to me. Now it's time to get to work, more to come in the spring!

2018 Must-Dos of My New Year’s Resolution

The most important projection for 2018 is to find new opportunities to show my work in galleries and alternative spaces, while pursuing the following projects:

  • Three new sculptures to be constructed in three different mediums and then cast in metal (one large scale in carving foam, and two figurative sculptures in clay and wax) to be ready by next summer

  • Continue to work on new commissions

  • Deliver a current commission for a local cultural institution

Thanks for your support and wishing you all a productive 2018, stay connected for upcoming events and news on the spring!

All best,

Marshall
