September is back to school and we have been busy flight training. Private Conversion (Fixed to Rotary Wing) has been the order of business. I am happy to report that our 70 year old Private Conversion on the Robinson R66 has passed his alternate category (PHRAC) with flying colours. We were also busy getting him ready for his flight test that was scheduled for the end of September and we would like to congratulate Mike Carriere on successfully passing his private flight test. So you are never too old to add another category to your licence.
Starting in October we will be moving over to a family owned R44 Clipper to complete a couple more Private Conversions and a Private Licence. So it really is back to school for these new owners and it should be back to school for anyone who owns their own helicopter.
Ask yourself when the last time you shot a 180 degree auto and your answer may be “my flight test”. If you have not had recurrent emergency training in a while, you should consider going out with an instructor and completing a good session. I would recommend a good review of the POH, ground briefing on pedal failures, autorotations, engine failures at the hover, hydraulic failures and other emergencies pertinent to your type of helicopter; then an hour or two reviewing emergencies in the air. A good refresher may be the difference of being a few yards short or making a safe landing spot if the engine decides to retire. When the kids go back to school you should too!
