Ever try sprouting seeds for your p'let?

A few years ago I was exploring different ways to diversify the foods that I was giving my parrotlets. I happened upon sprouting in my research and thought that I would give it a try. Boy, do they ever love the tender little morsels that I can provide via this easy sprouting method.

Why should I sprout for my birds?

  • it's packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants

  • it is an abundant source of enzymes

  • very protein rich

  • good obesity fighter

  • enhances overall health with fewer illnesses

  • brighter feather color and reduction of feather destructive behaviors

Several things that I have learned by experience is that although you can purchase individual types of seeds to sprout, it is easier, at least for me, to purchase a sprouting mix. This greatly reduces the time and energy it would take to purchase multiple seeds and then mix them together. Also, be sure to purchase organic seeds. The link below is the source where I purchase my seeds.

You can use a simple strainer and jar method, but I like this sprouter that I bought via Amazon. I also have more than a couple of parrotlets so it might be overkill for most folks. Then again, you can also eat the extra sprouts on your salad...

Two additional tips:

  • be sure to rinse your seeds and sprouts thoroughly each time you rinse

  • refrigerate extra sprouts to extend their life
